# Andrew Garfield’s Faraway Tree Faces His Smallest Box Office Start

*The Magic Faraway Tree opened in North America on August 21 with a wide family push, but MSN reported it is poised to mark Andrew Garfield’s weakest debut. For Vertical, the fantasy film arrives with real overseas money and a tougher domestic question.*

MSN reported that The Magic Faraway Tree is poised to give Andrew Garfield his weakest-ever North American box office debut, just as Vertical opened the fantasy adventure on 1,600 screens on August 21, 2026. Deadline reported that the film stars Garfield, Claire Foy and Nicola Coughlan, and that Vertical is aiming it at families with children 12 and under, plus Garfield’s audience. That is the sting here: this is not a tiny platform release. It is a broad family play arriving with a known actor, a known children’s-book title, and $32 million-plus already banked internationally.

## Andrew Garfield’s Family Film Opens Small

The Magic Faraway Tree is the kind of movie that should, on paper, have a clean lane. Deadline described it as Vertical’s first film in the kids’ space, adapted from Enid Blyton’s classic children’s book series by Simon Farnaby, the co-writer of Wonka and Paddington 2. That is a friendly set of names for parents scanning showtimes.

Yet the North American read is colder. MSN’s box office item framed the film as a new low for Garfield, with the fantasy movie poised to score his weakest-ever debut. That matters because Garfield is not being asked to carry a hushed adult drama here. He is one of the faces on a family release with a 1,600-screen footprint.

There is a difference between a small movie opening small and a wide release failing to catch. This looks closer to the second problem, at least from the reporting available so far.

## The U.K. Hit Did Not Travel Cleanly

Deadline reported that The Magic Faraway Tree has grossed $20 million in the U.K., where it opened in April, and more than $32 million internationally. Those are not throwaway numbers for a children’s fantasy film outside the usual franchise machine.

The North American launch, then, is not starting from zero awareness in the larger market. It arrives after proving there was an audience somewhere. The harder part is that North America often treats British children’s fantasy as either a major studio event or a curiosity. There is less middle ground than there should be.

The book history is also unusually deep. Deadline noted that the original Magic Faraway Tree books were published over a decade from 1939 and follow three siblings displaced to the countryside by family misfortune, where they find an enchanted tree and its odd residents. That premise has a soft, old-fashioned pull: children sent away, a strange place, magic that feels discovered rather than branded.

A movie can make that feel rich. It can also make it feel like homework from another country’s childhood.

## Vertical Bet on Parents and Andrew Garfield

Deadline reported that Vertical is targeting parents and kids 12 and under, along with fans of Andrew Garfield. That second group is the tricky one.

Garfield’s appeal has always been sharper than simple bankability. He can bring ache, nervous humor, and a slightly bruised intelligence to a part. Those are great screen qualities. They do not automatically move a family audience toward a fantasy film adapted from Enid Blyton.

For parents, the selling points are different: Is it safe? Is it funny? Will the children sit still? Does it feel like a real theatrical outing instead of something to wait for at home? The reporting does not give us audience exits or demographic splits, so the piece cannot say where the resistance is coming from. But the weak-debut framing from MSN tells us the opening is not matching the scale of the release.

That is rough for Vertical’s first move into kids’ films. A family label is built slowly, and parents remember which distributors give them reliable afternoons.

## The Weekend Was Crowded in the Wrong Ways

The Magic Faraway Tree did not arrive alone. Deadline’s August 21 specialty preview had A24’s Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony expanding to more than 1,640 North American runs, while Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma moved to 1,036 screens in its third week after strong limited starts.

Black Bear’s Spa Weekend went even wider, opening on more than 2,000 screens, according to Deadline. Focus Features had the sci-fi thriller Hot Spot at 286 locations. Neon opened It Ends in five theaters in New York and Los Angeles, with Deadline noting its 95% Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh score.

That mix matters because The Magic Faraway Tree needed to be the clear family choice while adult-skewing titles fought around it. Instead, the conversation in specialty and mid-level releases was busy. Tony had the heat of expansion. It Ends had the sharp horror hook. Spa Weekend had broad comedy positioning.

A gentle fantasy has to announce itself fast in that noise.

## Garfield’s Low Point Is Also a Distributor Problem

It is easy to make this only about Garfield because the MSN framing puts his name at the center. But the more useful read is about packaging.

The Magic Faraway Tree had a recognizable actor, a literary base, a U.K. commercial proof point, and a family pitch. Deadline reported all of those pieces. The North American trouble suggests those pieces did not combine into urgency.

Maybe the title meant more in Britain than here. Maybe the family audience needed a bigger studio megaphone. Maybe Garfield’s presence helped the film look classier without making it feel must-see to parents choosing one weekend outing. The current reporting does not prove any one of those answers.

What it does show is a gap between international traction and domestic lift. For Garfield, MSN says that gap may now register as his weakest opening. For Vertical, it is a reminder that family films are not soft bets just because the material has a tree, a book history, and a famous face in the branches.
