# Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s Favorite Sinners Shot Explains the Size of Her Oscar Win

*The Sinners cinematographer made Academy history, but the more revealing story is how she and Ryan Coogler used large-format film for fear, intimacy and a sunset chase.*

By CinePixo, 2026-08-22 · Craft

Autumn Durald Arkapaw won the Oscar for Best Cinematography for Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, becoming the first woman to win the category, as the Associated Press reported via PBS NewsHour.

That fact is enormous. It is also only the outside edge of the story. The work itself matters: the weight of the cameras, the decision to mix IMAX film with Ultra Panavision 70, the way a vampire introduction can feel like a Western and a bad dream at once.

The supplied reporting does not include details on Buddy Guy’s cameo or any update on Arkapaw reuniting with Coogler for The X-Files. It does give us something CinePixo readers will care about just as much: a clear look at the choices behind one of Sinners’ most forceful images.

## The Win Was Late, and the Work Was Ready

According to PBS NewsHour’s Associated Press report, Arkapaw was honored for Sinners at the 98th Academy Awards, held March 15, 2026. The AP also reported that only three women had been nominated in the category before her: Rachel Morrison for Mudbound, Ari Wegner for The Power of the Dog and Mandy Walker for Elvis.

The A.V. Club put the number in harsher focus, noting that the Academy took almost a century to name a woman as Best Cinematography winner. That is not a footnote. It is part of how this award lands.

Forbes reported that Arkapaw was also the first Black woman recognized in the category, and Yahoo, citing Blavity’s report, described her as Black and Filipina. PBS reported that she is the first Black person to win the award.

The danger with history-making wins is that the person can get flattened into the statistic. Arkapaw’s Sinners work refuses that. The movie needed images with bite: night air, smoke, sweat, music, menace, faces caught between ritual and survival. The Academy plaque matters, but it is the movie’s shadows that made the case.

## Large Format Without Reverence

PBS reported that Sinners was already historic before Oscar night because no woman had shot a movie on IMAX film before it. Yahoo, citing the American Society of Cinematographers and NBC News, reported that Arkapaw became the first female director of photography to shoot a feature using IMAX 65mm or any 65mm film format, and the first cinematographer to pair it with Ultra Panavision 70 on a feature.

Those formats can tempt filmmakers into museum behavior: wide frames, big vistas, a sense that every shot must announce its price tag. Arkapaw and Coogler seem to have treated the tools as pressure, not decoration.

PBS reported that Arkapaw had shot Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on IMAX digital, but film brought different problems. The cameras were large, loud and known for limiting movement. Before Sinners, she consulted Oppenheimer cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who advised her not to worry about the size or weight and to shoot as she normally would.

That advice shows in the best sense. Sinners does not feel like a film apologizing for its machinery. It has the physical confidence of a crew willing to move heavy equipment because the scene needs it.

## Her Favorite Shot Was Almost Not IMAX

The most telling detail in the AP report is Arkapaw’s account of one of her favorite Sinners scenes: the introduction of Jack O’Connell’s Irish vampire Remmick, with the Choctaw trying to hunt him down.

PBS reported that the scene was not initially planned for IMAX film because it was dialogue-heavy and the cameras are famously noisy. Coogler, Arkapaw said, likes to push limits. They shot it with the sun setting in the distance, using the grammar of a Western.

She described crane work, intimate material and a Steadicam shot inside a hallway. She also called the scene eerie, according to PBS.

That is the kind of choice that separates format worship from cinematography. The image is not big because the negative is big. It is big because the frame understands pursuit, dread and threshold. A hallway can be as charged as a horizon if the camera knows why it is there.

Arkapaw told PBS she could no longer imagine that scene in another format. That is the line that sticks. Not because it is grand, but because it is practical. A cinematographer knows when the tool has become inseparable from the feeling.

## Coogler’s Trust Is Part of the Image

Arkapaw’s collaboration with Ryan Coogler did not begin with Sinners. Forbes and Yahoo both reported that she previously worked with him on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The A.V. Club, citing IndieWire, reported that Coogler said he had full trust in Arkapaw and that they made the movie side by side. PBS reported that Arkapaw said when she thanks Coogler, he answers by thanking her for believing in him and trusting him.

That exchange matters because cinematography is not only taste. It is labor, timing, persuasion and nerve. A director can want scale; a cinematographer has to give that scale shape. A director can want fear; a cinematographer has to decide how much darkness the audience can read before the image goes dead.

Sinners is the sort of film that asks for trust at every level. Horror, historical drama, music and myth can collapse into noise if the camera cannot choose what deserves attention. Arkapaw’s work seems to know when to widen out and when to hold close.

## The Speech Looked Forward

During her acceptance speech, Arkapaw asked the women in the room to stand, according to PBS and Yahoo. She said she did not get there without them.

Forbes reported that she later told journalists that girls who look like her would sleep well that night because they would want to become cinematographers. PBS reported a similar backstage remark and quoted her earlier Associated Press comment that young women need to see someone in the job to picture themselves there.

The industry numbers remain ugly. Forbes cited San Diego State University’s Celluloid Ceiling report, which found that women made up 7 percent of cinematographers on the top 250 films of 2025. The A.V. Club cited the same figure and set it beside the Academy’s long delay.

So yes, the win matters as history. But the cleanest argument for it is still in Sinners itself: the sunset, the crane, the hallway, the camera refusing to treat size as spectacle when it can make size feel haunted.
