# Ava DuVernay’s 14th Sets Netflix Date After NYFF Closing Slot

*Ava DuVernay’s follow-up to 13th will reach Netflix in December after a New York Film Festival world premiere and a short theatrical run. The new documentary shifts from the 13th Amendment to the 14th, putting citizenship, due process and equal protection at the center of the argument.*

## Ava DuVernay’s 14th Now Has a Netflix Date

Netflix has set Ava DuVernay’s 14th for a global streaming release on December 4, 2026, according to Tudum by Netflix. Before that, the documentary will close the New York Film Festival on October 9, 2026, then open in select U.S. and UK theaters on November 27, 2026.

That timing matters because 14th is not arriving as a loose companion piece. It is being framed as a follow-up to 13th, DuVernay’s 2016 documentary about the 13th Amendment and mass incarceration. Deadline reported that the new film will have its world premiere as NYFF’s closing-night selection, exactly ten years after 13th opened the festival.

For anyone who remembers the force of 13th, that symmetry is hard to miss. DuVernay is returning to constitutional language not as museum glass, but as a live wire.

## From 13th to 14th, DuVernay Changes the Question

ComingSoon reported that 13th won two Emmy Awards at the 69th Creative Arts Emmy Awards and was nominated for an Academy Award. Deadline described the earlier film as an argument that loopholes in the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, led to the mass incarceration of Black Americans.

14th moves to the post-Civil War amendment tied to citizenship, due process, equal protection under the law and the prohibition on heads of state engaging in acts of insurrection, as Deadline reported. Tudum by Netflix says the documentary covers the amendment’s 150-year history and the way it has shaped the idea of citizenship in the United States, including recent court cases and legal fights.

That is a sharp turn, and also a natural one. 13th asked viewers to look at punishment. 14th appears to ask who gets recognized by the state in the first place.

DuVernay put the relation between the two films plainly in a statement carried by Tudum: “If 13th asked who gets caged, then 14th asks who gets counted.” It is the kind of sentence that tells you exactly where the film is aiming.

## NYFF Gives 14th the Closing-Night Stage

Deadline reported that 14th will close the 64th New York Film Festival, which runs from September 25 to October 12, 2026. James Gray’s Paper Tiger, which premiered at Cannes, is set as the opening film, according to the same report.

The festival placement gives 14th a serious launch. NYFF is not a casual platform for a documentary like this; it is a room where formal ambition and political argument can sit together without either one having to apologize.

DuVernay said in Deadline’s report that returning to NYFF a decade after 13th feels “especially meaningful.” She also said the festival is a place where films invite conversation rather than only applause, and described 14th as a film that interrogates a promise “powerful enough to change a nation” and divisive enough to remain contested for more than 150 years.

NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim called the film “a movie for the moment,” according to Deadline, and praised its clarity about how the present came to look the way it does.

## The Voices in 14th Point to a Legal and Political Fight

Deadline reported that 14th includes appearances by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, former Sen. Jeff Flake, Sen. Alex Padilla, Stacey Abrams, Sherrilyn Ifill, Robert Chang, Donald T. Critchlow and Hasan Piker.

That list suggests a film built around argument rather than decoration. Legal scholars, elected officials and political commentators are not neutral scenery in a DuVernay documentary. They are there because the subject is not settled.

Tudum’s synopsis, quoted by ComingSoon, describes the 14th Amendment as born from the wreckage of the Civil War and still caught in a fight over belonging. The film brings archival scholarship into contact with present-day headlines, according to that synopsis, and asks who gets to belong in America.

That last question is broad enough to become mush in the wrong hands. DuVernay’s best nonfiction work has usually been strongest when it refuses mush. 13th had the discipline of a case file and the velocity of an argument. If 14th follows that lead, the theatrical window before Netflix is not just an awards-season formality. It is a chance to hear the film with a room reacting around you.

## Netflix Gets a Constitutional Sequel With Real Heat

DuVernay’s career around 14th gives Netflix more than a prestige documentary slot. ComingSoon lists her work across This Is the Life, I Will Follow, Middle of Nowhere, Selma, 13th, A Wrinkle in Time and Origin. Deadline also cites When They See Us and Queen Sugar among her credits, and notes that she is the founder of Array.

The industry story here is clean: Netflix has dated a major DuVernay documentary for December 4 after a festival bow and a limited theatrical run. The film-reader story is more charged. 14th is arriving in the shadow of a film that helped turn constitutional text into mainstream movie conversation without sanding down the horror of the subject.

Deadline reported that NYFF described 14th as a response to a period in which democratic norms and principles have eroded and Black Americans have faced further disenfranchisement. That is NYFF’s framing, not a fact the piece can prove on its own, but it tells us how the festival is positioning the film.

DuVernay’s own Tudum statement is even more pointed. She said she is not asking viewers to look backward, but at “what kind of country is being written beneath our feet now.”

A December Netflix date makes 14th easy to access. The tougher part is what DuVernay seems to be asking viewers to sit with once it is there: citizenship not as a word from a schoolbook, but as a fight still being written in courtrooms, elections and ordinary lives.
