Jordan and Austin Butler already set as Tubbs and Crockett. Her role is still under wraps, but the casting followed a final chemistry test with Butler.* By Marcus Reid, 2026-08-21 · Away From Set ## Morrone Gets the Call Camila Morrone has joined the cast of Miami Vice '85, Deadline reported, adding another face to a Universal movie that already has Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the two names most readers will recognize first: Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and James “Sonny” Crockett. The News International reported that Morrone was offered an undisclosed role after a final chemistry test with Butler last weekend. That is the part of the story that tells you something about the job before anyone tells you the character's name. A chemistry test is a room with pressure in it. It asks an actor to walk in, stand beside a movie star already tied to the part, and make the people watching believe the film has a pulse there. Just Jared also reported that Morrone's character details are being kept under wraps. So the cleanest thing to say is this: Morrone is in the movie, the role has not been publicly named, and the reporting connects her casting to that final test with Butler. ![Austin Butler at a photocall for the film "Eddington" during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival](https://pokemon-dive.us-lax-4.linodeobjects.com/cinepixo/posts/2026/08/348e4cf4-e0b9-47b9-8c95-7d2bf0cb41d0.webp) *Photo: Gabriel Hutchinson · [CC BY-SA 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0) · [source](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Austin_Butler_at_the_2025_Cannes_Film_Festival_02.jpg)* ## A Cast Built Around Heat Jordan will play Tubbs, while Butler has been cast as Crockett, according to The News International and Just Jared. Deadline previously reported that Whitney Peak had joined the film, and AOL, citing Deadline, reported that Alden Ehrenreich is also in the cast. That is a lot of screen presence for a title with old neon in its bones. Jordan brings a focused physical charge to a room. Butler has made a habit of taking parts where the face has to do almost as much work as the dialogue. Morrone, Emmy-nominated for Daisy Jones & the Six according to AOL, has had to play feeling that is visible before it is explained. If this part places her opposite Butler, as the chemistry-test reporting suggests, the movie is asking her to carry more than a pretty frame beside a famous suit. AOL reported that Morrone is known for The Night Manager and Daisy Jones & the Six, and that she was recently seen in Netflix's Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. The News International also identified her with that Netflix project. AOL reported she is leading another Netflix adaptation, The Age of Innocence. For an actor, a movie like this can be both a large door and a tight hallway. The door is the size of Universal, IMAX, Jordan, Butler, and a brand people still remember by color and sound. The hallway is narrower: in a crime movie built around two men with famous names, every supporting role has to fight for air without looking like it is fighting. ![Austin Butler at a photocall for the film "Eddington" during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival](https://pokemon-dive.us-lax-4.linodeobjects.com/cinepixo/posts/2026/08/cc100df3-edf3-4d0d-83ef-eabda1513ffe.webp) ![A western kingbird ( Tyrannus verticalis ) spotted along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail in Austin, Texas, United States.](https://pokemon-dive.us-lax-4.linodeobjects.com/cinepixo/posts/2026/08/1b674ec4-5fb0-4886-982c-7ca8debb30a1.webp) *Photos: Gabriel Hutchinson · [CC BY-SA 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0) · [source](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Austin_Butler_at_the_2025_Cannes_Film_Festival_01.jpg); Larry D. Deadline reported that Kosinski is also producing with Dylan Clark through Dylan Clark Productions. The film is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, Deadline reported. Yerkovich executive produced the original Universal Television series with Michael Mann. Deadline also reported that Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. Kosinski's recent credits, as reported by The News International and AOL, include Top Gun: Maverick and F1. The News International quoted him telling Variety that he had admired Jordan for a long time and wanted to work with him. Kosinski also told Variety, according to The News International, that he admired Butler's choices and saw him as someone to watch. That is director talk, yes, but it matters because casting is not only a poster. It is a set of bets. Kosinski is betting that Jordan and Butler can make two old television names feel immediate again. The studio is betting that the words Miami Vice still mean enough to bring people into a theater in 2028. Morrone's casting adds a different kind of bet: that the romantic or personal heat around Crockett can matter as much as the cars, the guns, the clothes, and the water. ## Miami, Money, and Memory Just Jared reported that Miami Vice '85 is about the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami in a new version inspired by the first episode of the 1980s television series. Deadline described the film as inspired by the pilot episode of the Universal Television series and its first-season spirit. AOL reported that the original show ran from September 1984 to June 1989 and shaped fashion, music, television, and filmmaking during its run. The News International reported that the show lasted five seasons. Those facts matter because Miami Vice was never only about case files. It was about how a room looked after midnight. It was about linen jackets, sweat, expensive watches, tired cops, bad money, and the kind of city light that makes everybody look like they are hiding something. Universal plans to shoot the movie for IMAX, according to AOL, Deadline, and Just Jared. That means the money is going partly into scale: bigger images, bigger rooms, bigger pressure on faces. For Morrone and Butler, if their scenes lean romantic, IMAX is not only for speedboats. It catches hesitation. It catches the split second before someone says the wrong thing. The News International reported that Mann later directed a 2006 Miami Vice film with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. It also reported that the film grossed $165 million on a $135 million budget and was later regarded as a cult classic. AOL put the gross at more than $164 million and said critics praised Mann's direction while reviews were warm. Those numbers are not trivia. They are the old lesson sitting in the new production office. A title people know does not make the math easy. A good cast does not cash the check by itself. The people who build sets, scout streets, schedule night shoots, fit clothes, move cameras, and keep a huge production fed all feel the weight of a studio saying, yes, this one is going big. ## The Date on the Calendar Miami Vice '85 is scheduled to reach theaters on May 19, 2028, Deadline, AOL, and Just Jared reported. Production is set to begin later this year, according to Deadline, AOL, and Just Jared. There is a lot we do not know. We do not know Morrone's character name. We do not know how large the role is. We do not know whether the final film makes that Butler chemistry test the center of her part or one piece of a larger design. The reporting gets us to the doorway and stops there. Hope is allowed at the doorway. Mine is simple: Morrone has been cast in a movie where mood, faces, and tension should count. Miami Vice, at its best, has always needed people who can make silence look expensive and trouble look close. A chemistry test with Austin Butler is a small room before a very large screen. ## How this piece was made **Format:** Editorial feature ## In this piece - [Camila Morrone](https://cinepixo.com/people/camila-morrone) - [Austin Butler](https://cinepixo.com/people/austin-butler) - 2026 · [Michael](https://cinepixo.com/movies/michael-2026) - 2018 · [Vice](https://cinepixo.com/movies/vice-2018) - 2006 · [Miami Vice](https://cinepixo.com/movies/miami-vice-2006) - 1930 · [Romance](https://cinepixo.com/movies/romance-1930) ## Sources - https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1413066-camila-morrone-to-appear-on-screen-in-miami-vice-85 - https://www.msn.com/en-in/news/other/camila-morrone-joins-miami-vice-85-cast-with-michael-b-jordan-actress-to-romance-austin-butler/ar-AA2aCHpc - https://www.aol.com/articles/miami-vice-85-night-manager-220432000.html - https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/camila-morrone-joins-cast-miami-070000107.html - https://www.justjared.com/2026/08/20/camila-morrone-joins-miami-vice-85-cast-starring-michael-b-jordan-austin-butler/ - https://deadline.com/2026/08/miami-vice-85-whitney-peak-michael-b-jordan-austin-butler-1237042344/ Every factual claim above is drawn from these.
