# Dakota Johnson’s Venice Style Makes Sheer Dressing Look Controlled

*WWD looked back at Dakota Johnson’s Venice Film Festival red-carpet history before the 2026 festival opens Sept. 2. The pattern is less about spectacle than a quiet kind of nerve: Gucci crystal, Dior red, Prada pink, and dresses that ask the actor to hold the room.*

WWD, in a Yahoo Entertainment story published Aug. 22, looked back at Dakota Johnson’s Venice Film Festival style before the 2026 festival opens Sept. 2. The change is one of focus: Johnson’s Venice history now reads less like a set of isolated premiere gowns and more like a record of how an actor can use sheer fabric, red satin, black geometry, and pale Prada pink without looking swallowed by any of it. Film readers should care because these were not free-floating fashion moments. They arrived beside movies: “The Lost Daughter,” “Suspiria,” “A Bigger Splash,” and “Black Mass.”

## Dakota Johnson’s Venice Record Begins With the Movies

A festival red carpet is a funny room. It is about cinema, yes, but also about the small army of decisions that happen before anybody sits down for the film. A dress is chosen. Hair is fixed. Jewelry is weighed against the neckline. Shoes are either a mercy or a punishment. Then the actor steps out and has to make the whole thing look like breathing.

According to WWD, Johnson has worn designer looks at the Venice Film Festival from Dior, Gucci, Prada, and Marc Jacobs. That list alone tells you something. These are houses with strong opinions. A gown from one of them can arrive with a personality already in the room.

Johnson’s trick, at least in the Venice appearances WWD gathered, is that she does not appear to fight the clothes. She lets each look have its say, then keeps her own temperature low. That can be harder than it sounds. A person can wear a sheer dress and look as if the dress is doing all the talking. Johnson’s Venice record, as described by WWD, has often gone the other way.

## Gucci Crystal at “The Lost Daughter”

WWD reported that Johnson’s most recent Venice Film Festival red-carpet appearance came at the Sept. 3, 2021 premiere of “The Lost Daughter,” where she wore Gucci. The dress had a fully sheer bodice running into the skirt, with crystal jewels across it. Tassels and fringe added motion, while sharp shoulders gave the look a clean line.

That is a lot for one dress to ask of a person. Sheer fabric asks for nerve. Crystals ask for stillness, because every flashbulb wants to turn the body into a chandelier. Fringe asks for movement. Defined shoulders ask for posture. Put together, the gown could have been noise.

The WWD account places the dress in Alessandro Michele’s period as creative director at Gucci. WWD also reported that Michele later left Gucci for Valentino, and that Johnson, who had served as a Gucci ambassador, followed him there. She was appointed a Valentino ambassador in October 2025, according to WWD.

That detail matters because fashion on a festival carpet is not only a matter of taste. It is also about working relationships. A creative director makes a world. An actor decides whether she can stand inside it without looking like a guest in someone else’s dream.

## Dior Red for Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria”

For the Sept. 1, 2018 Venice screening of Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria,” WWD reported that Johnson wore a bold red strapless Dior satin gown. She paired it with red pumps and diamond column drop earrings.

This is the simplest look in the group, at least on paper. Red dress. Red shoes. Diamonds. The danger of monochrome is that it can flatten a person into one clean block of color. The advantage is that it leaves nowhere to hide.

A strapless satin gown asks for a different kind of performance than the Gucci dress. It does not scatter light in the same way. It depends on line, fit, and the actor’s face. In a festival setting, where cameras are hunting for the one frame that can travel around the world by breakfast, that restraint has its own nerve.

WWD called the gown simple and elegant. I would keep the plain part of that. Simple is not small. Simple is often the hardest instruction, because everybody can see the decision.

## Prada Pink and Marc Jacobs Black in 2015

Johnson appeared twice at Venice in 2015, according to WWD. On Sept. 4, for the “Black Mass” premiere, she wore a pink Prada dress. WWD described it as having a plunging neckline, a sleeveless shape, straps pulling the bodice together at the back, and a skirt with flow, waist definition, and cinching.

That is the softer side of the record, but not a timid one. Pink can be treated like innocence by people who do not trust color. Here, as WWD describes it, the dress had structure where it needed structure and exposure where it meant to have exposure. The back mattered. The waist mattered. The person wearing it mattered most.

Two days later, on Sept. 6, Johnson wore Marc Jacobs to the “A Bigger Splash” premiere, WWD reported. The black gown had geometric squares, circles, and other shapes, with an off-the-shoulder silhouette and long sleeves. WWD noted an Art Deco feeling in the design.

That dress sounds like the stern cousin of the Prada. Black, long-sleeved, off the shoulder, marked by shapes. It is less whisper than architecture. On another actor, it might have turned heavy. On Johnson, WWD’s Venice grouping makes it part of the same story: exposure handled with calm, and calm used as the real accessory.

## Sheer Styling Without the Shout

The phrase “understated sensuality” can sound like fashion copy trying to behave itself, but Johnson’s Venice history gives it some honest use. The looks WWD gathered are not modest in the timid sense. A sheer Gucci gown covered in crystal jewels is not shy. A plunging Prada dress is not hiding in the back row. A red Dior gown at “Suspiria” knows exactly what color it is.

What keeps the record interesting is the absence of panic. Johnson’s Venice dressing, as reported by WWD, has not depended on a single trick. She has worn Gucci, Dior, Marc Jacobs, and Prada. She has gone sheer, strapless, off the shoulder, sleeveless, jeweled, fringed, satin, black, pink, and red. The common element is not the fabric. It is the quiet control required to let the dress be noticed without letting it take the job away from the woman wearing it.

That is where festival style meets film work. On a red carpet, the actor is still performing, but the scene is brief and wordless. The costume has already been chosen. The lights are already up. All that is left is the face, the posture, and the decision not to overplay the moment.
