# Hayden Panettiere’s ‘A Breed Apart’ Director Says She Was Fighting to Stay Sober on Set

## What Griff Furst Said

Griff Furst, who directed Hayden Panettiere in the 2025 film *A Breed Apart*, said in an Instagram video that he saw the actress “fighting to stay sober” during production, according to the New York Daily News report carried by Yahoo.

Furst was speaking after Panettiere’s death at 36. AOL, citing OK!, reported that he said he was not in South Carolina and did not know what happened there. He framed his comments around what he says he personally saw on his own set.

That matters. The line between concern and certainty is thin here, and Furst did not claim to know Panettiere’s cause of death. Yahoo reported that authorities were awaiting toxicology results.

What he did describe was a working environment where, in his view, Panettiere needed more support than she had. He said she “deserved better company around” her than what he observed, according to Yahoo.

For anyone who remembers Panettiere as the live wire of *Heroes*, or the wounded, funny, steel-spined center of so much of *Nashville*, that sentence lands hard. It is also one man’s account, made after a death that is still under official review.

## The Set Concerns

Furst said he had known Panettiere for about a decade before *A Breed Apart*. AOL reported that he was excited when she joined the film because he knew how talented she was and wanted to work with her.

In an earlier Instagram video described by AOL, Furst recalled being told by the film’s security team that something seemed off after Panettiere arrived on set. He said he went to greet her and Brian Hickerson, her boyfriend, and that Hickerson opened the door.

Furst said Panettiere was kind and eager to work, but “not okay,” according to AOL. He did not give the details behind that assessment. He said that after more than 100 movies, the situation was noticeable to him, and that the energy in the room felt “pretty dark.”

That is a bleak image, but it is not a full record. It is not a police report, a medical finding, or Panettiere’s own account of that day. It is a director remembering the unease of a set where the work still had to happen.

Furst also said that after filming began on *A Breed Apart*, he was asked to take part in an intervention for Panettiere, according to Yahoo. He said that, as far as he knew, the gathering never happened.

## What a Director Could Do

Furst’s comments are striking because they do not paint him as someone with easy answers. According to Yahoo, he said directors and producers have limits when they believe an actor or crew member may be in a bad situation.

He said a production can change the schedule, collect internal reports, and assign someone to watch over the person as best as possible. That is a narrow tool kit for a human problem.

There is a painful movie-world truth inside that. Sets can be intimate and impersonal at the same time. People notice when someone is hurting. They may even write things down. Then the call sheet arrives, the light changes, the day costs money, and care becomes a patchwork of small choices.

None of that removes responsibility from anyone. It also does not mean every concern can be turned into proof in the moment. Furst’s account sits in that uncomfortable middle space.

He said he had believed Panettiere’s situation had improved after seeing press coverage tied to her memoir release in May, according to Yahoo. That detail makes the timing sadder, because it suggests distance: someone who cared from outside the room, seeing public signals and hoping they meant private relief.

## Brian Hickerson and the Unknowns

Yahoo reported that Hickerson was visiting Panettiere during production of *A Breed Apart*. The same report said family and friends had voiced concern about his presence in her life after her death.

Yahoo also reported that Hickerson has been accused of no wrongdoing in Panettiere’s death, while noting a documented history of abusive behavior toward her. That distinction is essential. The piece does not know what happened in South Carolina. It does know what has been reported about the relationship before.

TMZ reported, according to Yahoo, that Hickerson was asleep in a bedroom of the home where Panettiere was found unresponsive in a living room chair by Hickerson’s brother. Yahoo also reported that Narcan, used to reverse opioid overdose effects, was reportedly found on the property.

Those facts are heavy, and they should not be pushed further than the reporting allows. Narcan’s presence does not, by itself, answer what caused Panettiere’s death. Authorities were still waiting for toxicology results, according to Yahoo.

AOL also cited Panettiere’s 2022 interview with People, where she spoke about drugs, alcohol, and Hickerson. She said none of his past behavior was okay, while also saying she was open to people getting help and making amends. In the same interview, she described drugs and alcohol as something she had come to feel she could hardly live without.

Those were her words about her own life. Furst’s comments are someone else’s view of a later moment.

## A Hard Last Look at a Gifted Actor

*A Breed Apart* was released in May 2025, according to AOL. It now sits in Panettiere’s filmography with a weight no movie should have to carry: one of the last chances audiences had to see her work while the people around her worried about her off camera.

Panettiere was never a performer who disappeared into bland polish. Even in glossy material, she brought a bright, bruised alertness. She could make a line feel like a comeback and a confession at once. That is part of why reports like this hurt. They attach the private cost of survival to a face many viewers first met when she was still very young.

Furst said he was lucky to work with her and wished she were still here, according to AOL. That is simple enough to leave alone.

The strongest part of his account is not the claim that he saw trouble. It is the admission that seeing trouble did not mean he knew how to stop it. On a film set, Panettiere was still showing up to work. Furst says he saw someone trying to stay sober. The movie kept rolling.
