# Insidious Opens to $25.3 Million, but Camp Miasma Is the Rarer Win

*Sony’s sixth Insidious landed where horror franchises hope to land. MUBI’s Camp Miasma did something smaller and more interesting: it turned a niche slasher expansion into real theatrical evidence.*

Dread Central reported on August 23, 2026, that Insidious: Out of the Further opened to an estimated $25.3 million while Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma pulled in about $1.9 million from 1,036 theaters. That is the weekend’s useful horror lesson: the familiar brand still has muscle, but the weirder slasher is no longer stuck at the edge of the room. For readers who track horror as both cinema and business, this matters because the same weekend gave theaters two very different kinds of proof. One came from a 15-year-old franchise. The other came from a MUBI release that, according to Dread Central, had grown from five theaters to more than 1,000.

## Insidious: Out of the Further Still Has Gas

Variety reported before the weekend that Insidious: Out of the Further was tracking between $23 million and $27 million in its domestic debut. Dread Central later put the estimate at $25.3 million, which means the sixth Insidious movie did exactly what a studio wants from a late-series horror entry: it landed inside the expectation range and slightly above the $23 million figure Dread Central’s Brad Miska had forecast.

No, it did not match The Red Door. Variety noted that Insidious: The Red Door opened to $33 million in 2023, and Dread Central also framed Out of the Further as coming in below that start. Still, the context is kinder than the raw comparison. Variety reported that the new film cost $18 million to produce, which keeps the bar for theatrical success lower than it would be for a bulked-up studio tentpole.

The Insidious machine has always been built on that math. Variety reported that the first five low-budget entries had made a combined $740 million globally, with The Red Door reaching $189 million worldwide and Chapter 2 holding the franchise’s biggest domestic opening at $40 million. Those numbers explain why another trip to the Further was never a strange bet. Horror does not need to beat superheroes to matter. It needs to keep returning money while giving audiences a reason to leave the house.

## Camp Miasma Turns Niche Heat Into Theatrical Reach

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is the weekend’s better story because its number carries more surprise. Dread Central reported that the MUBI slasher made roughly $1.9 million from 1,036 theaters, bringing its domestic total to around $3.6 million. The same report said Miska had thought $1.5 million projections were too cautious and that the film could flirt with $2 million. It did.

That phrase matters because it is the correct scale. Nobody is pretending Camp Miasma is suddenly a four-quadrant studio animal. The appeal here is narrower and stranger. Dread Central called it a niche movie and credited its marketing and word of mouth with helping it find an audience. The detail that sticks is the theater count. A movie that began in five theaters and then crossed 1,000 screens is not just hanging around; it is being given more room because somebody saw enough demand to keep pushing.

For horror, that is the oxygen. The genre lives on brands like Insidious, but it gets its charge from the films that look too odd, too sticky, or too specific to be treated like reliable business. Camp Miasma flirting with $2 million does not turn it into a phenomenon. It does make it harder to dismiss as a curiosity that only worked in a few coastal rooms.

## It Ends Gets a Weak Platform Before Expansion

The roughest horror-adjacent number in Dread Central’s report belongs to NEON’s It Ends. The film earned about $60,000 from five theaters, or around $12,000 per theater, before its planned nationwide expansion. That is not a collapse, because five theaters is still a platform play. It is not a clean launch, either.

Dread Central was openly skeptical of the release path. The outlet reported that It Ends premiered at SXSW more than a year earlier, briefly appeared digitally, disappeared, and has now been brought back for a theatrical run. That kind of release history makes momentum harder to read. A film can survive a strange path if the campaign gives viewers a clear reason to treat the theatrical run as an event. A $60,000 start does not yet give NEON much cover.

The unknown is whether a younger audience shows up when the movie expands. Dread Central raised that possibility but did not claim it would happen. That is the honest place to leave it for now: the platform number is thin, the release history is odd, and the nationwide run has to create heat that the first weekend did not.

## Hot Spot Goes Cold in 268 Theaters

Hot Spot had the weekend’s ugliest math. Dread Central reported that the Noomi Rapace sci-fi thriller grossed around $250,000 from 268 theaters, less than $1,000 per theater. The outlet said it had expected the movie might struggle to reach $500,000, and the actual estimate came in far below that.

There are weekends when a small gross still looks purposeful: awards positioning, a regional play, a tiny platform designed for later growth. This does not read that way from the figures Dread Central reported. Two hundred sixty-eight theaters is wide enough to expose a lack of demand, and the per-theater average is the kind of number distributors cannot dress up for long.

Dread Central argued that Hot Spot likely belonged on streaming instead of spending money on a theatrical campaign. That may sound harsh, but the number makes the point plain. Theatrical can still be magic for horror and genre films when the audience senses an occasion. Without that charge, the release becomes a receipt.

## Spider-Man Ruled, but Horror Gave the Weekend Its Pulse

Variety reported before the frame that Spider-Man: Brand New Day was expected to stay at No. 1 in its fourth weekend with $35 million to $40 million, while Insidious: Out of the Further was likely headed for second place. The superhero giant was never the target for Insidious. It did not need to be.

The more useful comparison is inside the horror lane. Insidious delivered the dependable franchise result. Camp Miasma delivered the strange one. It Ends and Hot Spot showed how quickly theatrical can turn cold when the hook is unclear or the release path is muddy.

FandomWire, writing before full grosses were available, placed Out of the Further fourth in its franchise ranking and described the new entry as an expansion of the series mythology, with Amelia Eve’s Gemma able to enter the Further and bring entities into reality. That is the lore pitch. The box office pitch is simpler: Sony still has a horror brand people will pay to see, and MUBI has a slasher that climbed from five theaters to 1,036. In late August, that second number may be the one horror distributors study hardest.
