# Ludwig Göransson Made The Odyssey Sound Like Bronze Before It Sounded Like Myth

*Christopher Nolan asked for a score without orchestra, and Ludwig Göransson answered with ancient Greek instruments, 35 bronze gongs, scrap metal and voice. The result sounds less like prestige wallpaper than a film trying to hear its own century from very far away.*

Christopher Nolan told Ludwig Göransson not to use an orchestra for The Odyssey, Variety reported, and that single restriction may be the smartest music note attached to the film.

For a director who loves weight, clocks, engines and pressure, the command makes sense. Homer does not need a lush modern cushion. Odysseus does not need strings telling us he is sad. The film needed a sound that could scrape, ring, breathe and bruise.

## No Orchestra For Ithaca

According to Variety, The Odyssey marks Göransson’s third collaboration with Nolan after Tenet and Oppenheimer. That matters because their work together has never treated music as decoration. Tenet pushed rhythm until it felt like machinery with a pulse. Oppenheimer made dread feel physical.

For The Odyssey, Nolan’s instruction was blunt: no orchestra. Variety reported that Göransson had previously told Time Magazine the orchestra did not exist back then, and that the limit gave him a chance to make something different.

That is the kind of rule a composer can resent or love. Here, it seems to have opened the room. A full orchestra would have made The Odyssey grand in a way we already know. It would have brought the film closer to the older screen language of myth: brass for kings, strings for longing, drums for war. Nolan and Göransson appear to have wanted the opposite. Not smaller. Older. Stranger.

## Bronze, Metal, Air

Variety reported that Nolan suggested bronze as a thematic element because the film is set in the Bronze Age. Göransson rented 35 bronze gongs in different sizes and experimented with them.

That detail is beautiful because it is practical before it is poetic. Thirty-five gongs is not a metaphor. It is a room full of metal waiting to be struck. Göransson also described hitting walls, railings, scrap metal and air conditioning units, according to Variety.

This is where the score starts to sound exciting on paper. Not because scrap metal is automatically profound, but because The Odyssey is a story of bodies meeting hostile surfaces: ship hulls, stone, sea, doors, weapons, thresholds. Metal on metal can say more about danger than a heroic theme played too neatly.

There is a risk in this kind of scoring. It can become a bag of clever noises. But Göransson’s best work tends to organize pressure. He knows when sound should move like a system and when it should crack open. If the gongs and found metals work, they give Nolan’s world a harsh, ceremonial skin.

## The Old Instruments Matter

Variety reported that Göransson also used a lyre and an aulos. Those names carry weight for anyone who cares about the period, but the important thing is not simple authenticity. Nolan’s film is not a museum case. It is a huge studio version of an ancient poem, distributed by Universal Pictures, with Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope.

The lyre and aulos help because they keep the music from floating free of the world. They give the score a human scale next to all that bronze. A plucked string can feel intimate without turning soft. A wind instrument can suggest breath, ritual, warning, grief.

Variety reported that Nolan said in a featurette that he wanted the film to feel recognizable while avoiding the look and feel of earlier movies set in the classical world. The music seems to follow the same thought. It is not trying to prove that this is exactly what ancient Greece sounded like. It is trying to keep the film from sounding like every modern image of ancient Greece.

That distinction matters. Accuracy can become a dead end in cinema. Texture is where the feeling lives.

## Voice Against The Metal

The score also uses vocals, Variety reported, with Göransson saying they add emotional pacing. That phrase is useful because it points to the real job of voices here. A voice can soften a hard sound world, but it can also make it more severe.

In The Odyssey, home is not just a place on a map. It is a pressure point. Forbes, in Dani Di Placido’s piece on Zeus’s Law, described Nolan’s film as repeatedly returning to sacred hospitality, the guest-host rule known in Homer as xenia. Forbes reported that the film uses “Zeus’s Law” for that idea, and that the rule affects the story’s turns.

That is where voices can cut deepest. A gong can mark fate. A human voice can make the rule feel personal. If the film is about homes opened, violated, missed and reclaimed, then the score needs something that sounds like a body in the room.

Variety also reported that the soundtrack includes the original song When I’m Home, written by James Blake, Travis Scott, Göransson and Nolan, and performed by James Blake, Travis Scott and Göransson. The title alone sits right on the film’s nerve.

## A Myth Heard Sideways

The released track list, as printed by Variety, includes cues named Zeus’s Law, Ithaca, Penelope, Telemachus, Cyclops, Troy, Hades, Sirens, Welcome Home Stranger, Odysseus and The Trial of the Bow / Vengeance. Those titles make clear that the score is not hiding from the famous beats. It is walking straight toward them.

The choice is in the sound. A track called Cyclops can lumber. A track called Sirens can seduce. We have heard those choices before. Göransson’s instrument list suggests something more abrasive: myth as struck material, not smooth legend.

Nolan wrote the screenplay from Homer’s poem and produced the film with Emma Thomas under Syncopy, Variety reported. The cast named by the outlet includes Damon, Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, Jimmy Gonzales and Elliot Page.

A cast that large can pull a film toward pageantry. Göransson’s score, at least in its reported materials, pulls the other way. Bronze rings. Scrap metal bites. The lyre and aulos keep the air old. The voices remind us that every law in The Odyssey eventually arrives at a door, a table, a bed, a home.
