The names tell us less about plot than about the kind of pressure each actor is being handed.* By Marcus Reid, 2026-08-24 · Away From Set Marvel Studios made its new X-Men movie feel less like rumor and more like a job sheet at D23 2026, where the studio confirmed a May 5, 2028 theatrical release and named the first actors in its mutant lineup. According to Yahoo, Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, Kit Connor will play Scott Summers, Christopher Abbott will play Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving will play Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette will play Rogue, Maya Boyd will play Storm, and Adam Driver will play Nathaniel Milbury, better known in the comics as Mister Sinister. For film readers, that matters because this is the MCU’s first full step into X-Men country after years of waiting, old Fox films, and many internet campfires built out of rumor. ## D23 Put Marvel’s Mutants on the Calendar The new X-Men film is set for May 5, 2028, according to Yahoo and The Playlist. Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts, is directing. Men’s Health reported that Lee Sung Jin, Schreier’s Beef collaborator, is co-writing the script. IBTimes Singapore reported that Joanna Calo is also among the writers. There is no trailer yet, and Yahoo reported that Marvel has not released a story synopsis. That is a useful brake on the excitement. We know the chairs at the table. We do not yet know the meal. NewsBytes reported that Schreier said after the D23 reveal that he wants to use corners of X-Men history that have not recently been done on screen. NewsBytes also reported that Schreier is drawing from Chris Claremont’s long comics run and Jonathan Hickman’s 2019 Krakoan reboot. Yahoo reported that X-Men: The Animated Series is informing the film’s character-first structure, based on comments from Lee Sung Jin. That gives me hope, and I mean hope, not knowledge. The X-Men work best when the powers are not the whole personality. The laser eyes matter. The same outlet noted that Sink is best known as Max on Stranger Things, appeared with Brendan Fraser in The Whale, and was nominated for a 2025 Tony Award for John Proctor is the Villain. Jean Grey asks an actor to hold stillness and danger in the same face. A lot of Jean’s story, in comics and previous screen versions, has been about a woman whose inner life is treated like a weather event. Sink’s recent resume suggests Marvel is asking her to carry feeling without making it tidy. Kit Connor has the other hard job: Scott Summers, also called Cyclops. Cosmopolitan described Scott as the eventual team leader, a young man whose eye beams require special glasses or a visor. Men’s Health reported that Connor is best known from Heartstopper, played a young Elton John in Rocketman, and appeared in the 2025 war film Warfare. Scott can be a thankless part if written flat. He is the person in the room saying, “Maybe let’s not destroy the building,” while everyone else gets the wild entrance. Men’s Health traced Abbott from Girls to James White, It Comes at Night, Possessor, Poor Things, Wolf Man, Hulu’s Catch-22, and a Tony-nominated turn as Biff in Death of a Salesman. Professor X is not just a man with a school. He is a man asking frightened young people to believe discipline can save them, even when the world outside may not agree. Abbott has made a career out of men who look like they are keeping a room together with both hands. That seems useful here. Maya Boyd will play Storm. Cosmopolitan reported that this is her first major screen role, after Broadway work in & Juliet, Merrily We Roll Along, and the 2026 revival of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Men’s Health also noted her stage background and said X-Men may mark her film debut unless another movie arrives first. Storm is royalty, power, grief, calm, and fury, often in the same breath. Casting a stage actor without a long screen image can be a risk, but it can also be a gift. The audience is not bringing ten old parts into the theater with her. Cosmopolitan described Emma as a telepath who can turn into diamond and who has moved between hero and villain in the comics. Men’s Health reported that Weaving is known for Ready or Not, the two Babysitter films, and the 2026 crime film Carolina Caroline. Emma Frost needs poise with a blade under it. The part asks an actor to let the audience enjoy the danger before asking them to trust the person carrying it. Weaving’s screen work, especially in horror, gives Marvel someone who knows how to make fear funny without sanding off the bite. Inde Navarrette will play Rogue. Men’s Health reported that she appeared in 13 Reasons Why and Superman & Lois, then broke out in the 2026 horror film Obsession, which the outlet said earned wide critical praise and made nearly $500 million worldwide against a reported $750,000 budget. Rogue has the kind of power that turns a touch into a threat. That lands on the actor’s face before it lands in the effects department. Men’s Health noted that earlier films made Anna Paquin’s Rogue central, but often placed her as someone for Wolverine to protect. This version has room to walk in with more force. ## Adam Driver’s Mister Sinister Points to Stranger Trouble Adam Driver will play Nathaniel Milbury, also known as Mister Sinister, according to Yahoo, The Playlist, and IBTimes Singapore. IBTimes Singapore reported that Marvel announced the casting at D23 and that Driver said by video he and Kevin Feige had talked for years about him joining the MCU before finding this role. IBTimes Singapore described Mister Sinister as Dr. Nathaniel Essex in the comics, a Victorian-era geneticist changed through experiments tied to Apocalypse, with powers including healing, telepathy, and long life. The outlet also reported that Sinister’s comics history is closely tied to Jean Grey and Cyclops. Driver arrives with the biggest movie shadow here: Star Wars, Marriage Story, BlacKkKlansman, Ferrari, and years of stage and director-driven film work, as Cosmopolitan and Men’s Health both noted. A villain like Sinister can go wrong if he becomes only pale makeup and speeches. Driver’s gift has often been making a large emotion feel embarrassingly human. One name not on the confirmed list is Beast. GeekTyrant reported before D23 that Charles Melton had been linked to Hank McCoy and had reportedly passed on the role, while Yahoo later noted that Melton was still among actors rumored for Beast after the reveal. Marvel has not confirmed Beast casting in the reporting here. So the board is not full.
