# Netflix Brings Guillaume Canet Back For Ad Vitam Sequel

*Ad Vitam Eternam is now in production, with Guillaume Canet returning as Franck Lazareff and Sophie Marceau, Mathieu Amalric and Nicolas Duvauchelle joining the cast.*

Netflix has started production on a sequel to Ad Vitam, the 2025 French action-thriller that turned Guillaume Canet’s Franck Lazareff into one of the streamer’s bigger non-English film bets.

Deadline reported that the follow-up is working under the title Ad Vitam Eternam, with Canet back as the former elite agent and Ludovic Colbeau-Justin taking over directing duties from Rodolphe Lauga. Cineuropa also reported that principal photography has begun, with the production set across several French regions.

## Franck Lazareff Is Back In Trouble

The new film picks up after the first Ad Vitam, which ended with Franck released from prison after his wife produced evidence clearing his name. Deadline reported that the sequel begins after Franck survives an assassination attempt following that release.

The official synopsis, cited by Deadline, Variety and Cineuropa, puts him in familiar hard-pressure territory: he wants to know who wants him dead, hides with his family in the mountains, and is found by French intelligence services. Their offer is blunt enough for this kind of movie: carry out a covert mission, and they will give him the truth he is chasing.

That is a clean sequel engine. Ad Vitam was built around a man yanked back into violence by a personal emergency. Ad Vitam Eternam appears to keep the same pressure point, but shifts the lever from rescue to reckoning. Franck is no longer only trying to save his family. He is trying to learn why the danger keeps following them.

## Netflix Is Treating Ad Vitam Like A Real Asset

The sequel makes sense because Ad Vitam performed like the kind of title Netflix wants to keep alive. Deadline reported that the first film generated about 54 million views during its first month on the platform after its January 10, 2025 release.

Cineuropa reported that Ad Vitam later entered Netflix’s top ten most popular non-English films globally, accumulating 63.1 million views and 103 million hours viewed according to Netflix viewing data. Variety said the first film climbed to No. 9 on the streamer’s most popular non-English film chart.

For readers who track Netflix’s international action lane, that matters. This is not just a polite renewal for a regional performer. It is Netflix France moving fast on a film that found a wide audience without needing a pre-sold comic book, game, or English-language star package.

Canet is central to that. Variety identified Franck as a former operator for the GIGN, the elite tactical unit of the French National Gendarmerie. Cineuropa described him as a former elite agent dismissed after a tragic accident, then pulled into a conspiracy after masked men abduct his pregnant wife. The first film’s appeal was simple and sturdy: a skilled man, a family under threat, a state-sized secret pressing in from all sides.

## Sophie Marceau And Mathieu Amalric Join The Cast

Canet returns alongside Stéphane Caillard, Nassim Lyes and Zita Hanrot, according to Cineuropa, Variety and Deadline. The new names are the sharper industry signal: Nicolas Duvauchelle, Sophie Marceau and Mathieu Amalric have joined the sequel.

Digital Spy noted the Bond connection in the casting. Marceau played Elektra King in The World Is Not Enough, while Amalric played Dominic Greene in Quantum of Solace. AOL also pointed to their Bond history while reporting their addition to the Ad Vitam sequel.

Their roles have not been disclosed in the reporting. That is worth keeping clean. The cast list gives the film weight, but the available reports do not say whether Marceau or Amalric are allies, targets, handlers, villains, or something less tidy. With this kind of thriller, the fun often lives in that uncertainty, but the facts stop at their casting.

Ludovic Colbeau-Justin directs the follow-up. Cineuropa credits him with Néro: The Assassin, The Lion and cinematography on How to Make a Killing, while Deadline notes his recent success with How to Make a Killing. Rodolphe Lauga directed the first Ad Vitam.

## Canet Is Writing As Well As Starring

The screenplay has been written by Canet and French novelist Maxime Chattam, with David Corona collaborating, according to Cineuropa and Variety. Corona also co-wrote the first Ad Vitam, which gives the sequel at least one writing link back to the original film’s setup.

Cineuropa identified Canet as both star and producer here, with Jean Cottin producing through their Paris-based Cabanes Productions. Deadline also reported that the film is produced by Cabanes Productions, Canet’s company with Cottin.

The production will shoot in Île-de-France, Normandy, Savoie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, according to Cineuropa, Variety and Deadline. Those locations suggest the sequel is not staying boxed inside one urban chase grid. The mountain-hideout premise already points toward a broader physical scale, and the regional spread gives Netflix plenty of room for pursuit, cover, and exposure.

## No Release Date Yet

Netflix has not announced a release date for Ad Vitam Eternam. Cineuropa reported no date has been set, and Digital Spy also noted that the sequel has no release date while Ad Vitam remains available to stream on Netflix.

The working title may change before release. Variety translated Ad Vitam Eternam as “to eternal life,” a title that sounds grander than the blunt survival mechanics described in the synopsis. That tension may be the point: Franck Lazareff keeps being promised answers, but the price is always another mission, another body count, another official bargain made in the dark.
