# Primetime Director Answers Chris Hansen’s Complaint Over Pattinson Film

Lance Oppenheim has answered Chris Hansen’s complaints about Primetime, the A24 film that casts Robert Pattinson as the former To Catch a Predator host. In comments reported by The Hollywood Reporter on September 3, Oppenheim said he hopes Hansen watches the movie in a theater, even as he refused to verify Hansen’s account of the legal terms attached to a private screening. That clash matters because Primetime is not an authorized biography: it turns Hansen’s television persona, and the ethics of turning predator stings into entertainment, into fictional material without his participation.

## Oppenheim Wants Hansen to “Have a Seat”

Oppenheim’s line is polite in the way a raised eyebrow is polite. “I’m excited for him to ‘have a seat’ and watch the movie in a movie theater,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. The phrase riffs on Hansen’s signature command from To Catch a Predator, which ran on NBC from 2004 to 2007 and paired hidden-camera confrontations with law-enforcement arrests of men who believed they were meeting underage victims.

Hansen has criticized the project publicly, though the reporting differs on exactly what happened when he was invited to a private screening. Yahoo Entertainment said Hansen claimed A24 wanted him to surrender rights to his name, image and brand, along with legal rights, before he could watch. The Hollywood Reporter described his complaint as a demand to sign away rights to his name after receiving a nondisclosure agreement. A source close to A24 told that outlet the document was a standard pre-premiere NDA meant to prevent spoilers and advance discussion.

Hansen declined to sign and has not seen the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The A.V. Club reported that he had voiced concerns despite not having watched Primetime. Those facts leave a clean limit on the story: nobody outside the filmmakers and the studio can say what the movie actually does with Hansen’s life, because Hansen has not seen it and the film has not opened.

## The Cameo Video Behind the Movie

The project began with a joke that turned into a thesis. In 2024, Oppenheim’s wife bought him a recorded birthday message from Hansen after the release of the director’s FX documentary Spermworld. Hansen congratulated him, delivered “have a seat,” then began promoting other projects. Oppenheim told The Hollywood Reporter and The A.V. Club that the clip revealed Hansen as more than a crusading journalist: he was also an entertainer, conscious of the media character he had built.

Oppenheim calls Primetime almost an adaptation of that Cameo. That is a sharper origin story than the usual publicity mush about “timely conversations.” A filmmaker receives a personalized message, notices the persona selling itself in real time, and decides the persona—not the man’s authorized testimony—is the subject.

The director also described To Catch a Predator as “performative justice,” comparing its spectacle to an old public pillory or whipping post. The point is not subtle, and it does not need to be. The show made punishment into television, then made its host into a cultural object people could imitate, mock or market.

## A Film About the Job, Not Hansen’s Permission

Oppenheim said he could not address the screening dispute because he was not present. He did offer the film’s stated argument: Primetime examines what round-the-clock work inside an extremely dark world does to the people producing it, especially when serious journalism must be shaped into entertainment.

The Hollywood Reporter said the screenplay, by first-time writer Ajon Singh, was loosely adapted from an Esquire article by Luke Dittrich. Singh said he did not want a conventional biopic. He wanted something heightened and subjective, moving along the line between reality and spectacle—the same unstable mixture he sees in To Catch a Predator.

That makes the film’s distance from Hansen deliberate. The filmmakers did not involve him, and Oppenheim’s language treats the public “Chris Hansen” as a collage assembled from broadcasts, interviews and internet culture. He called Pattinson’s version a “reconfigured egregore,” a grandiose term for a figure built by repetition until the person and the image stop separating.

## Robert Pattinson’s Voice Is Part of the Argument

Pattinson watched episodes of the show, Hansen’s podcast and interviews while preparing. The Hollywood Reporter said Hansen called Pattinson’s voice imitation “pretty good” after seeing the trailer. Pattinson has said the role interested him because he wanted to understand the unpredictable alchemy created when Hansen’s methods, fame and television performance collided.

The director gave Pattinson room to make choices that surprised him, treating the actor much as he would a documentary subject. That process produced the film’s central tension: a fictional performance built from a real public persona, made by people arguing that the persona itself has become the story.

Primetime premieres at the Venice Film Festival before its September 25 theatrical release. Pattinson’s schedule also includes The Odyssey and Dune: Part Three, but the immediate question is smaller and nastier: will Hansen sit down, watch the movie, and answer it on its own terms? For now, he has not signed the document, and he has not seen the film.
