# Resident Evil Director Zach Cregger Says He Wouldn’t Survive His Own Movie

Zach Cregger says he would not survive the version of Resident Evil he made. GameSpot reported the director’s blunt assessment as Sony’s new film heads toward its September 18, 2026 theatrical release. That matters because Cregger built this entry around practical danger, one exhausted medical courier, and a story that refuses to ease off the gas.

The film stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier caught in a terrible night. Cregger wrote and directed it for Constantin Film and Columbia Pictures, with an $80 million budget and a listed runtime of 90 minutes. The cast also includes Zach Cherry, Paul Walter Hauser and Kali Reis.

Cregger has already made two films known for changing their shape: Barbarian and Weapons. This time, he says, he wanted to keep one character moving from the first point to the last. He wanted a straight run through the dark, with no large turn waiting in the middle.

## Austin Abrams nearly took a 150-pound hit

The most frightening story from the set belongs to Abrams. Moviefone reported that Cregger wanted the effects to look real, so the crew designed a street sequence with zombies dropping from rooftops on both sides of Bryan.

The setup used cranes, body-sized blood bags and repeated rehearsals. The bags were released as Abrams ran, then hit the street and burst around him. One came loose too early. It missed him by inches.

Cregger said the bag weighed about 150 pounds. Had Abrams been one step to the right, the director said, it would have killed him. That is the kind of detail that changes the way you hear “practical effects.” It is not a slogan on a poster. It is a performer running while heavy objects fall close enough to end the day forever.

Abrams still has to carry Bryan through the whole picture. The role asks him to sell fear, speed and fatigue while the machinery of the scene stays just outside the frame. Cregger’s comment about his own chances is funny in the way a true safety story can be funny only after everyone walks away.

## Cregger wanted a Resident Evil story of his own

Cregger began writing Resident Evil without expecting to direct it. He believed the brand carried enough weight that the studio would choose someone else. That distance gave him permission to write the version he wanted, he told Moviefone.

He approached the script as a fan of the games, which he has played since Resident Evil 2. He said the games work because they are survival horror rather than simple action. The player usually has enough to get by, but never enough to feel safe.

That feeling is the part he carried to the film. He did not want to retell Leon’s story or improve on stories the games already tell well. The movie takes place in that world with a new character and a new problem. Bryan is not a replacement for the game heroes. He is the person Cregger chose to put in the corridor when the lights go out.

## The movie keeps its foot on the gas

Cregger said he deliberately avoided the major tonal break used in Barbarian and Weapons. He described the new challenge as staying with one character and maintaining pressure from beginning to end.

Moviefone’s report says the film is designed not to stop. That does not tell us whether the experiment works; the movie has not opened yet. It does tell us what Cregger is attempting. He is treating speed as a formal choice, not a promise that the plot will pause for a familiar franchise detour.

For viewers, that could make the film feel closer to the games’ anxious resource management than to a parade of set pieces. That is hope, not a verdict. The premise gives it a fair chance: a courier, a collapsing night, and no safe place to wait for help.

## A dog, freezing nights and a director running out of gas

The hardest sequence for Cregger involved a dog. He described filming in freezing weather, working at night for months and trying to control an animal he called terrifying. He was sick, exhausted and ready to be anywhere else.

That confession puts a human face on the production. An $80 million movie still comes down to a tired person in the cold, trying to get a dog to hit a mark. The decision to shoot at night lands on crews who keep strange hours. The decision to use practical stunts lands on actors who must trust the timing of cranes, bags and trained animals.

Cregger’s Resident Evil arrives with a simple wager: take the games’ survival-horror tension, leave their central stories alone, and keep Bryan moving until the night is finished. The director says he would not make it through his own movie. Austin Abrams came within inches of proving how serious that joke can be.
