# Rooney and Kate Mara Turn First Film Together Into a Venice Twin Act

*The sisters coordinated in black and white for the Sept. 3 premiere of Werner Herzog’s “Bucking Fastard,” their first film together. The clothes echoed their roles without reducing two distinct actors to a publicity gimmick.*

Rooney Mara and Kate Mara arrived at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 3 with a family first: the world premiere of “Bucking Fastard,” Werner Herzog’s competition film and the sisters’ first acting project together. Deadline photographed them at the Sala Grande screening with Herzog and co-stars Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson. On the carpet, Rooney wore black Louis Vuitton while Kate wore a black-and-white Armani Privé gown. The pairing mattered because their characters, Joan and Jean Holbrooke, speak together, dream together and love the same man. Here, for once, coordinated dressing had a job beyond feeding the camera.

## Rooney and Kate Mara Dress as a Pair, Not a Matching Set

The black-and-white scheme began at the film’s photocall. Vogue reported that Rooney wore a white Stella McCartney halter gown with a ruffled, asymmetrical hem, while Kate chose a black-and-white McQueen minidress edged with lace. Both wore white sandals.

Then came the premiere and the palette flipped. WWD described Rooney’s Louis Vuitton dress as a fitted black midi with thin straps, a deep V neckline and fabric gathered heavily around the hem. She added a silver necklace and pointed black pumps. Kate’s Armani Privé gown moved from a white bodice into a sequined black skirt, with an open, lace-up back and a large pearl detail.

This could have become method dressing by committee: twins in the movie, sisters outside it, somebody fetch two identical gowns and call the photographers. Instead, their stylists kept the visual rhyme and dropped the copy machine. Vogue identified Ryan Hastings as Rooney’s stylist and Johnny Wujek as Kate’s. Same colors, different proportions, separate personalities. You could tell who was who without a caption, which is a low bar that celebrity styling often trips over in six-inch heels.

## “Bucking Fastard” Gives the Sister Act a Peculiar Point

Deadline reported that Kate plays Jean and Rooney plays Joan, sisters whose closeness reaches comic and unsettling extremes. They speak in unison, repeat the same verbal mistake and share dreams and an attachment to Gareth Maloney, played by Bloom.

After the sisters become tabloid subjects, a government social worker played by Gleeson tries to fit them into contemporary life, according to Deadline. Jean and Joan instead pursue an imaginary place where true love can exist by digging a tunnel through a mountain range. The story moves between an urban setting and the Irish wilds.

That premise explains the clothes; it does not certify the film. Nobody needs to confuse a synchronized press tour with evidence that a movie works. But the Maras used the obvious sales hook—their real sisterhood—without turning the carpet into fancy dress. That is the jolt here: publicity symbolism with enough restraint to remain legible.

## Their First Shared Film Drew on a Lifetime Together

At the Venice press conference, Rooney, 41, called the prospect of playing what she described as the same person “very daunting,” People reported. She said their shared childhood and history gave them an unspoken connection, and called making the film a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Kate, 43, said the sisters found a rhythm in delivering dialogue together, comparing it to a song, according to People. That is a practical acting detail, not mist sprayed from the family-brand machine. Two performers had to time shared speech, and years of knowing each other helped.

Kate had discussed that professional bond before. In a 2017 ABC News interview cited by People, she said Rooney’s entry into acting gave her someone with whom she could discuss auditions, bad reviews and the general lunacy of the profession. They lived together early in Rooney’s career.

## Venice Answered With Six and a Half Minutes

Outlook India reported that “Bucking Fastard” received a six-and-a-half-minute standing ovation after its premiere. The outlet said Herzog drew cheers when he entered the auditorium and appeared emotional during the applause. Rooney and Kate embraced after the credits.

Ovation arithmetic is one of festival culture’s sillier financial instruments: applause gets timed, packaged and traded as if seven minutes were a bond rating. Still, an embrace between sisters after their first shared film needs no conversion table.

The movie is competing for Venice’s Golden Lion. Outlook India reported that Cannes first invited it without offering a competition berth; Herzog declined, and Venice later put it in the main contest. The red carpet sold sisterly synchronization. The festival gave the film the harder thing: a place in the race.

## The Maras Kept the Bit Going in Calvin Klein

The coordination did not end at the premiere. At the Cartier Cinema Club event hosted by Vanity Fair, Rooney and Kate both wore Calvin Klein Collection spring 2026 designs, Yahoo reported. Rooney took the long black apron-style version with a black cotton headscarf; Kate wore the short white version with a matching washed-satin scarf.

This was the nearest the campaign came to literal twinning, and even then length and color kept the sisters distinct. Earlier polish gave way to something stranger and more severe—the right final image for a film about two women who speak together and start tunneling through mountains. One sister in black, one in white, both wearing headscarves: the movie had its poster before anybody printed one.
