# Shailene Woodley Says The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Cut Mary Jane to Wait on Gwen

*Shailene Woodley says she was cast as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, shot scenes with Andrew Garfield, then learned about a year later that the part was gone. The explanation she recalls points straight at studio math, a crowded script, and a third film that never arrived.*

Shailene Woodley says The Amazing Spider-Man 2 cast her as Mary Jane Watson, then cut the part about a year after she filmed it. In a recent SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations interview, Woodley said she shot roughly three scenes with Andrew Garfield before the studio dropped her from the 2014 release. For movie readers, the point is simple: this was not a mystery cameo gone stale. It was a whole character, then a studio decision, then a franchise that kept rearranging itself until the chair disappeared.

## Woodley’s Mary Jane never got to the theater

AOL and Yahoo both reported Woodley calling the role her dream part. She said Mary Jane had been her favorite character growing up, which makes the cut sound less like a scheduling hiccup and more like a door slammed in the middle of a line reading. She filmed with Garfield. Then, a year later, she says she got the call: she was out.

That is the sort of superhero-movie story the publicity machine never puts on the poster. The ads sell destiny. The actual business is closer to white-out and a calendar.

## Gwen Stacy held the center

The Amazing Spider-Man films had already made a different choice. Marc Webb’s franchise introduced Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s girlfriend, and the series gave her the emotional center. Mary Jane, in the comics, is Peter Parker’s primary love interest. In Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, Kirsten Dunst played her opposite Tobey Maguire.

Woodley says the people behind the Sony film wanted to wait on Mary Jane until Gwen’s story finished. She says they told her, in effect, let’s wait for Gwen to die and then bring in Mary Jane. That is blunt enough to be funny in a grim way, and it also tells you how these things work: not with grandeur, but with a spreadsheet and a knife.

The Gwen Stacy material matters because it makes the cut legible. If the film had already leaned hard on Stone’s character, another major love interest would have turned the whole thing into a traffic jam.

## Sony said the story was too crowded

The Hollywood Reporter said in 2013 that Woodley’s scenes had been cut, and director Marc Webb framed the choice as a story problem. He said the team wanted to streamline things and focus on Peter and Gwen. Variety later reported that producer Matt Tolmach described a 148-page script for a two-hour movie and said the film had too much story.

That is studio language at its most honest and its most pathetic. Too much story is often a polite way of saying the movie does not know which part it wants to pay for. Woodley’s Mary Jane landed in that squeeze. The role existed. The scenes existed. The movie decided it had no room for them.

Woodley also said the explanation she heard made sense to her at the time. That matters. Not because it softens the cut. It doesn’t. It matters because the logic was not random. It was the logic of a franchise trying to keep one relationship alive long enough to justify the next movie.

## The third film never arrived

Woodley says the plan was to bring Mary Jane in after Gwen Stacy’s story ended. Then Sony scrapped the third Amazing Spider-Man film after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed against expectations, and the whole setup vanished with it. No third movie, no Mary Jane re-entry, no tidy handoff.

This is where the franchise math gets ugly. A character can get written out for strategic patience, then the strategy dies first. You end up with an actor who shot scenes for a part that the studio meant to save for later, and later never comes.

That is the real oddity here, not the deleted footage. The movie business loves to act as if every cut has a noble logic. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it just means a company backed itself into a story corner and shut the door.

## Garfield came back without Woodley

Andrew Garfield did return as Spider-Man in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, alongside Tobey Maguire, and that comeback got a warm reception. The old franchise thread got a second life. Woodley’s Mary Jane did not.

That contrast gives this whole episode its sting. One part of the Spider-Man machine got revived after years away. Another got trimmed before it ever got its shot. Woodley says she had three scenes. Then the movie said no. Then the third film said no by not existing. That’s the cleanest version of the story, and it ends with a role that never reached the screen.
