# Spider-Man Holds No. 1 as Nolan’s Odyssey Passes His Own Peak

*Spider-Man: Brand New Day won its fourth North American weekend with $39 million. The sharper industry story is beneath it: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is now his biggest film, while most new releases failed to break through.*

By CinePixo, 2026-08-26 · Industry

Spider-Man: Brand New Day stayed at No. 1 in North America for the fourth straight weekend, taking $39 million over the August 22-24 frame, according to Yahoo Entertainment and the Toronto Sun. That would be a strong opening for many studio films. For a fourth weekend, it is muscle. The richer story for film readers is what happened just below it: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey added $19.5 million and, as Yahoo Movies Canada reported, became Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date in both domestic and worldwide grosses. A superhero giant is still holding the room, but Nolan’s R-rated epic has become the summer’s stranger long-game winner.

## Spider-Man Still Owns the Weekend

Yahoo Entertainment reported that Spider-Man: Brand New Day beat Insidious: Out of the Further by nearly $14 million. Moviefone noted that the horror sequel briefly led on Friday before Spider-Man retook the weekend.

The Toronto Sun, citing Exhibitor Relations, put Brand New Day at $854.9 million in the United States and Canada since its July 31 release, plus $1.37 billion internationally. Yahoo Movies Canada reported that the film is now close to passing Avengers: Endgame on the all-time domestic chart, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

There is a funny kind of fatigue around a run this large. The numbers get so big that they stop feeling like numbers and start feeling like weather. But $39 million in weekend four still says something plain: audiences have not treated Brand New Day like a first-weekend obligation. They are still buying tickets after the rush.

## Insidious Takes Second Without Needing First

Insidious: Out of the Further opened in second place with $25.3 million from 3,303 domestic theaters, according to the Toronto Sun and Yahoo Movies Canada. Yahoo Entertainment reported another $35 million overseas and an estimated $18 million budget.

That makes the result cleaner than the ranking suggests. A sixth Insidious film does not need to beat Spider-Man to justify itself. David Gross of FranchiseRe, quoted by the Toronto Sun, called it a solid opening for the sixth entry in a horror series and said the drop from the fifth film’s 2023 debut was large but typical for sequels.

Sony had the top two films for the weekend, with Brand New Day and Insidious: Out of the Further. That is the kind of distributor result that turns a crowded late-August frame into a victory lap, even when one title is clearly doing far more of the lifting.

## The Odyssey Gives Nolan a New High

The Odyssey finished third with $19.5 million in its sixth weekend, according to the Toronto Sun and Yahoo Movies Canada. The same reports put its domestic total at about $539.1 million.

That figure matters because Yahoo Movies Canada reported it has passed the unadjusted domestic gross of The Dark Knight, which stood at $534.9 million. The outlet also reported that The Odyssey reached about $1.4 billion worldwide, helped by strong turnout in South Korea and China, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing title to date.

Yahoo Entertainment also noted that The Odyssey had become the highest-grossing R-rated release ever the previous week. For a long, expensive, adult-skewing Nolan film to keep earning at this level in its sixth weekend is not just a nice hold. It is a reminder that premium theatrical appetite does not belong only to comic-book brands and family animation.

The drop tells the story. The Toronto Sun reported The Odyssey was down only 17 percent from the prior weekend. A sixth-weekend fall that small, while Spider-Man and a new Insidious are both taking oxygen, is the kind of hold studios spend years trying to engineer.

## New Releases Found Little Space

Beyond Insidious, the new films had a rougher weekend. Yahoo Entertainment reported that Mutiny opened with $7.5 million, while Spa Weekend opened a little over $3 million and had the lowest per-theater average among the weekend top ten.

Yahoo Movies Canada reported Mutiny, a Lionsgate title starring Jason Statham as a man framed for killing his billionaire employer, opened in sixth place from 2,703 screens. The same outlet reported the film had briefly streamed for free on Prime Video by mistake before release, while also noting poor reviews as a drag on its performance.

Spa Weekend landed ninth with an estimated $3.1 million across 2,009 theaters, according to Yahoo Movies Canada. The outlet described it as a vacation comedy with Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau, and reported that PostTrak data showed women made up roughly 84 percent of its opening audience.

The rest of the chart was mostly holdovers and curiosities. The Toronto Sun placed Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie fourth with $9.1 million, The End of Oak Street fifth with $9 million, Tony seventh with $5 million, The Fast and the Furious re-release eighth with $3.1 million, and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma tenth with $1.9 million.

Yahoo Movies Canada reported the summer season has reached about $4.4 billion in North American ticket sales through Labor Day, among the four highest summer frames on record. It also reported year-to-date box office has crossed $7 billion, up 20.4 percent from 2025 but still 7.1 percent below 2019.

That is the tension inside this weekend’s chart. Spider-Man is huge. The Odyssey is historic for Nolan. Insidious did its job. Underneath them, several films could barely get heard over the noise.
