# Spider-Man Keeps Insidious at No. 2 in a $134M Weekend

*Sony owned the weekend: Spider-Man: Brand New Day stayed first with $39 million, while Insidious: Out of the Further opened to $25.3 million. The result pushed the domestic frame to an estimated $134.2 million, another big 2026 sign for theaters.*

Spider-Man: Brand New Day led the North American box office again over the weekend ending August 23, 2026, while Insidious: Out of the Further opened in second place. Arise News reported that the domestic weekend reached an estimated $134.2 million, with Sony holding the top two spots: $39 million for Spider-Man in its fourth weekend and $25.3 million for Insidious 6 in its debut. That matters because this was not a one-film weekend. A superhero sequel kept climbing toward Avengers: Endgame, a horror series still had bite, and the 2026 box office kept putting real distance between itself and last year.

## Spider-Man: Brand New Day Is Closing on Endgame

Arise News reported that Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an estimated $39 million from 4,006 theaters in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $854.9 million. That leaves it about $3.4 million short of Avengers: Endgame’s $858.3 million North American total.

That is a wild neighborhood for any film, even a Spider-Man film. The Tom Holland and Zendaya sequel, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is now close to becoming the second-highest-grossing film in North American box office history, per Arise News. The same report noted one caveat: Endgame is scheduled for a September reissue, which could change the ranking again.

Deadline put the global scale in sharper focus, reporting that Brand New Day made $109 million worldwide in its fourth weekend: $39 million domestic and $70 million overseas. Deadline said the film’s worldwide total stands at $2.22 billion, with $854.9 million from the U.S. and Canada and $1.365 billion from international markets.

For a film in weekend four, that is not coasting. That is still an event.

## Insidious: Out of the Further Gives Sony a Horror Win

Insidious: Out of the Further opened to $25.3 million from 3,303 locations, according to Arise News. Yahoo reported that the new film added $35 million internationally for a $60.3 million global start, against an estimated $18 million production budget.

The A.V. Club called the debut “very respectable,” and that feels right. Horror sequels do not need superhero numbers to do their job. They need a clean hook, a manageable cost, and enough audience urgency before word of mouth starts thinning the crowd. Yahoo noted that this is the fifth Insidious film to open above $20 million, with only the original 2010 film missing that mark at $13.2 million stateside.

Arise News reported that Out of the Further follows Gemma, a young mother who discovers she can enter The Further and bring entities from it into the real world. The film was directed and written by Jacob Chase.

The opening also came with a mixed audience signal. Arise News reported that the film received a C+ CinemaScore, the same grade as Insidious: The Red Door. The best grades in the series remain Insidious 2 and Insidious 3, both at B+.

Deadline reported that the new opening lifted the Insidious franchise to $800 million worldwide. For a horror brand built on low cost and recurring dread, that number says plenty.

## The Audience for Insidious 6 Was Not Accidental

Arise News reported that women made up 57 percent of the opening audience for Insidious: Out of the Further, compared with 43 percent men. Women under 25 gave the strongest definite-recommendation score at 62 percent.

That detail matters more than the usual “horror overperformed” shorthand. The Insidious series has always sold a particular kind of scare: domestic spaces, family fear, a paranormal logic that can feel silly until the lights go out. This new entry appears to have reached the young audience segment most ready to pass it along.

Arise News also reported that the film played especially well in the South Central and Western regions, which accounted for 46 percent of its weekend gross. RelishMix data cited by Arise News put the movie’s pre-release social media universe at 282.2 million across TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube, above the 182 million recorded by The Red Door before its 2023 debut.

The Red Door still opened higher domestically, with Arise News reporting its July 2023 debut at $33 million after $5 million in Thursday previews. Out of the Further started with $3 million in Thursday previews. So this is not a case where every number points up. It is a case where the film did enough, in the right price range, with the right audience, to give Sony another useful late-summer horror result.

## The Odyssey, Mutiny and the Rest of the Frame

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey stayed in third place with $19.5 million from 3,091 theaters, according to Arise News. The film fell 17 percent and reached $539 million domestic and more than $1.44 billion worldwide.

Arise News reported that The Odyssey has passed The Dark Knight to become Nolan’s highest-grossing domestic release. It has also overtaken Deadpool & Wolverine as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. Its IMAX run remains huge: Arise News reported about $10 million from IMAX over the weekend, pushing the domestic IMAX total to $180.7 million, the biggest in the format’s history.

Below the top three, the weekend thinned out fast. Arise News reported Paw Patrol: Dino Movie in fourth with $9.1 million and a $35.4 million domestic total. The End of Oak Street took fifth with $9 million and a $38 million cumulative haul.

Jason Statham’s Mutiny opened in sixth with $7.5 million from 2,703 theaters, according to Arise News. The Lionsgate action film, directed by Jean-François Richet, earned a B+ CinemaScore and opened above Statham’s Shelter, which began with $5.5 million in January. Arise News reported that industry sources said an online leak appeared to have little impact, since the film had already been tracking toward a high-single-digit start.

The A.V. Club, citing Box Office Mojo, listed the rest of the top ten as Tony, The Fast and the Furious re-release, Spa Weekend, and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Arise News reported Tony at $5 million after expanding to 1,642 theaters, the Fast and Furious re-release at $3.1 million, Spa Weekend at $3.05 million from 2,009 theaters, and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma at $1.93 million.

## A $134.2 Million Weekend Changes the Summer Math

Arise News reported that the domestic weekend’s estimated $134.2 million total was about 71 percent higher than the same period last year, when Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters - Sing-Along led with $19.2 million.

The year-to-date numbers are the bigger tell. Arise News reported that 2026 domestic box office revenue has passed $7 billion through August 23, up 20 percent over the same period last year and about seven percent below the comparable point in 2019. Summer revenue has reached roughly $4.4 billion, up 26 percent from last summer and six percent ahead of the comparable 2019 period.

A weekend led by Spider-Man, Insidious, and Nolan is not a normal weekend, and nobody should pretend it is. But the spread is useful: comic-book spectacle, horror sequel, R-rated auteur blockbuster, family animation, adult-skewing drama, action programming, specialty expansion, anniversary re-release. The weekend did not depend on one lane staying open.

The sharpest number is still Spider-Man’s $854.9 million domestic total, sitting close enough to Endgame that a September reissue now matters to the chart.
