# Spider-Man Keeps Labor Day No. 1 as Coyote vs. Acme Holds Its Ground

*Spider-Man: Brand New Day is closing in on the domestic record while Coyote vs. Acme posts a sturdy second weekend. Their Labor Day numbers show two very different kinds of theatrical staying power.*

Spider-Man: Brand New Day remained No. 1 over the Labor Day weekend, extending its run at the top of the domestic box office and moving within striking distance of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Deadline reported a projected four-day holiday gross of about $22 million, taking Sony and Marvel’s film to roughly $922 million in North America by Monday, September 7, 2026. Coyote vs. Acme, meanwhile, held firm in its second weekend, with Ketchup Entertainment’s release tracking toward $14.5 million over four days and a $37 million domestic total. For moviegoers, the holiday frame offered a useful reminder: a blockbuster can chase history while a once-shelved mid-budget comedy quietly builds an audience beside it.

## Spider-Man’s sixth weekend keeps the record in sight

Brand New Day’s latest win is impressive because Labor Day is rarely treated as a major theatrical launch window. Studios often fill the holiday with leftovers. Deadline noted that the exception in recent years was 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which still owns the holiday’s best opening with $94.6 million.

Spider-Man did not need a splashy debut this weekend. It needed another sturdy hold. The film earned $3.86 million Friday, down 30 percent from the previous Friday, and was projected at $17.25 million for three days before the four-day estimate reached $22 million. Its sixth weekend at No. 1 would give it a remarkable stretch of control over the domestic chart.

The larger target is The Force Awakens’ $936.6 million domestic total. Hollywood Outbreak reported that Brand New Day passed $900 million in 36 days, the fastest film ever to reach that mark domestically. If the Labor Day estimate lands, Spider-Man would sit about $14 million away from the Star Wars figure. Deadline’s reporting put the gap at less than $16 million by the end of Monday.

That pace also places the film inside a bigger summer story. Rentrak had the May 1–September 3 domestic marketplace at $4.643 billion, with the season potentially reaching $4.76 billion. The previous record, set in 2013, was $4.756 billion. Deadline cautioned that the final number could still finish $8 million to $23 million below that mark, despite the longer 2026 summer—130 days compared with 123 in 2013.

## Coyote vs. Acme refuses the weekend-two drop

Coyote vs. Acme’s numbers are less historic, but they may be more revealing about how a theatrical release can recover from a strange path to the screen. Warner Bros. shelved the animated comedy before Ketchup Entertainment brought it to cinemas. In its second weekend, it expanded to 3,727 theaters and earned $2.6 million Friday, a 51 percent drop from its previous Friday. Deadline projected $11.5 million over three days and $14.5 million over four, bringing the running total to about $37 million.

Hollywood Outbreak’s earlier projection was slightly higher, putting the four-day weekend around $15.3 million and the cumulative total near $37.8 million. Either estimate describes a film holding better than a front-loaded opener that disappears after one week. Its theater count grew by 152 locations for the holiday, giving audiences more chances to find it while Spider-Man and The Odyssey occupied most of the oxygen.

Fiction Horizon had already described Coyote vs. Acme’s daily grosses as steady rather than collapsing after opening weekend. That distinction matters for a film with a built-in curiosity factor: viewers know it spent years in limbo, but curiosity alone does not produce a second-weekend hold. The holiday numbers suggest the Looney Tunes comedy is finding enough repeat interest and family traffic to keep its run alive.

## The Odyssey remains a formidable second-place holdover

The other major holdover, Universal’s The Odyssey, stayed in second. Deadline projected $16.4 million over four days, lifting its domestic total to $588.1 million after eight weekends. That would make it Universal’s second-highest-grossing domestic release, behind Jurassic World’s $653.4 million and ahead of The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $574.1 million.

The film’s worldwide total was reported at $1.59 billion, with a possible path toward Jurassic World’s $1.67 billion global haul. Domestic history may be harder: Deadline called overtaking Jurassic World’s North American total a stretch. Still, The Odyssey’s weekend position shows how much room a durable hit can retain months into its run.

## New releases struggle to break through

The newcomers had little chance of changing the holiday’s shape. Paramount’s By Any Means led the new releases with $8.55 million over four days and a B+ CinemaScore. Lionsgate Grindstone’s Fall 2: Deadpoint was tracking at $2.7 million, while A24’s Onslaught was headed toward $2.3 million with a C CinemaScore.

That contrast sharpens the point of this weekend. Big films still command the screens, but the strongest evidence of audience appetite came from endurance: Spider-Man pressing toward a record, The Odyssey adding another substantial chapter, and Coyote vs. Acme staying present after the novelty of its release had passed. By Monday, the top of the chart was familiar. The interesting part was how many different ways those films had earned the right to remain there.
