# Tamil Producers Freeze September Releases Over the Eight-Week OTT Fight

*Tamil producers say new theatrical releases will stop from September 1 after theatre owners and distributors demanded an eight-week gap before streaming. The fight now reaches past release dates into shoots, post-production, and the 2026 Tamil slate.*

By Dorothy Kwan, 2026-08-24 · The Argument

The Tamil Film Producers Council and the Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association have said no new Tamil films will open in theatres from September 1, after theatre owners and distributors insisted on an eight-week theatrical window before any OTT release. Hindustan Times, Outlook India, NewsBytes and ABP Live all report the same core rupture: producers say the demand came without consultation, and film readers should care because the September calendar now has actual movies hanging in mid-air, including Karthi’s Sardar 2. This is not an abstract policy spat with men in conference rooms polishing nameplates. It is the old cinema bargain getting yanked around by streaming money, theatre survival, and a written promise nobody wants to sign on command.

## TFPC And Theatre Owners Turn The OTT Window Into A Stop Sign

According to Hindustan Times, the Tamil Film Producers Council and the Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association announced on Saturday that no new Tamil films will release in theatres from September 1. NewsBytes reports that the TFPC made the announcement after a meeting at its premises, citing ANI.

The trigger, as Outlook India reports, came from the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Distributors Association. They said they would screen only films carrying a written commitment for an eight-week theatrical window before streaming. ABP Live adds that the two associations also decided against making advance payments for new films, according to the producers’ body.

That is the small print with teeth. Eight weeks sounds clean when it sits in a trade statement, like a sensible border drawn with a ruler. But the producers are saying the ruler landed on their fingers. Per Hindustan Times, the Producers Council said the theatre and distributor decision came without consultation with the TFPC, the Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association or other industry associations.

The council’s line, quoted by Hindustan Times and NewsBytes, was blunt: when such a decision gets taken, the Producers Council has decided not to release new films. No mist, no poetry, no “stakeholder synergy.” Just: you made a rule about our films without us, so the films stop.

## Sardar 2 Is The September Name Caught In The Door

The first visible casualty may be the early September slate. Outlook India reports that Karthi’s Sardar 2, directed by PS Mithran, sits among the biggest titles facing uncertainty. Hindustan Times says Sardar 2 had been set for September 10.

Other films named across Outlook India and Hindustan Times include Immortal, with G.V. Prakash Kumar and Kayadu Lohar; Mandaadi, with Soori and Suhas; and Demonte Colony 3, starring Arulnithi and Priya Bhavani Shankar. These are not vaporware titles from a studio mood board. They are dated or expected September releases now trapped in an industry argument over who gets to decide the afterlife of a film.

There is a funny little cruelty in this. The OTT window exists because the theatrical run no longer feels like the only event. Everybody knows the second market waits outside the hall, checking its watch. Theatre owners want the film to stay exclusive long enough to mean something at the box office. Producers want freedom to sell the film in a market where many projects already arrive bent under cost, debt, and risk.

NewsBytes reports the Producers Council said around 250 films release each year and many struggle to complete and release their films. ABP Live reports the council also pointed to the industry’s reliance on distributor payments, even for productions involving investments worth hundreds of crores. That detail gives the dispute its thump. This is not only about when a viewer can stream a film at home. It is about cash moving early enough for films to get made, finished, and placed in theatres at all.

## Shoots And Post-Production Join The Shutdown Threat

The announcement does not stop at theatrical release. Hindustan Times reports that the producers’ body said shooting and post-production work on Tamil films will also halt. Telangana Today, citing IANS, reports the producers said all film shoots and post-production work would come to a standstill from September 1.

That is the escalation. Release dates are one thing; work stoppage is another. Once shoots and edit rooms enter the fight, the dispute stops looking like a calendar hiccup and starts looking like an industry pressure tactic with workers in the blast radius.

Outlook India reports that the producers’ bodies appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to intervene, citing the impact on thousands of workers. NewsBytes says the TFPC and the Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association sought state government intervention and named TFPC Vice President S Kamalakkannan and Secretaries S Kathiresan and R Radhakrishnan as issuing the announcement on behalf of the council.

Telangana Today reports one note of movement from the other side: Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association Secretary S Sridhar told IANS he hoped the issue would be resolved soon through talks, saying several films were slotted for release from September and that the parties would meet and look for a solution.

The piece does not know whether those talks will happen before September 1, or whether any side will blink. It says only what the reporting says: producers have announced a halt, theatre owners and distributors want the eight-week pledge, and the government has been asked to step in.

## Jailer 2 And The 2026 Slate Now Sit Under A Cloud

The names beyond September are the reason this story travels outside trade circles. Outlook India and Hindustan Times both name major 2026 Tamil films that could face uncertainty if the dispute drags on: Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, Dhanush’s Om, Vijay Sethupathi’s Bathha, and Jason Sanjay’s Sigma.

Careful here. No one has reported that those films are delayed. No one has reported that any of them will miss a date because of this fight. The reporting says the release environment could become uncertain for them. That is enough. You do not need to inflate the thing into doom. The actual fact already has voltage.

The falsest phrase in these disputes is usually “amicable solution,” because it makes money sound like etiquette. Telangana Today reports the producers said they would bring the problem to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the minister concerned in a bid to find one. Maybe they will. But the argument on the table is hard, clean, and commercial: theatres want eight protected weeks; producers reject a rule made without them; distributors’ advance payments sit inside the quarrel; films due in days are now bargaining chips.

A movie release used to sound like a date with the public. Here it sounds like paperwork with a threat attached: sign the eight-week promise, or the screen goes dark for new Tamil films from September 1.
