Here are the films, tributes and oddities shaping this year’s Oscar-season launch.* By CinePixo, 2026-09-05 · Industry Telluride Film Festival has unveiled its 2026 lineup, bringing Jesse Eisenberg’s *The Debut*, Simon Stone’s *Elsinore* and Mike Leigh’s *Tender Loving Care* to world premiere audiences in Colorado from September 4–7. The festival has also reserved a Sunday-night slot for an unnamed film that will not be announced before the screening. For film watchers, that combination says plenty: Telluride still wants discovery to feel like an event, even as its program carries a heavy awards-season charge. ## Jesse Eisenberg’s *The Debut* leads a packed premiere slate *The Debut* is Eisenberg’s first film since *A Real Pain*, which earned two Oscar nominations and a supporting-actor win for Kieran Culkin. According to Vanity Fair, this new film could hardly be further from that drama. It is a musical comedy about Mona Friedman, a timid middle-aged woman played by Julianne Moore, who becomes the star of a local theater production and grows close to its enigmatic director, played by Paul Giamatti. Telluride executive director Julie Huntsinger described the film to Vanity Fair as absurd, funny and deliberately “corny” in the best sense. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Huntsinger considers the movie fantastic and sees Eisenberg improving with each feature. Stone’s *Elsinore* carries a sharper historical edge. Andrew Scott plays British actor Ian Charleson, who took on *Hamlet* at the National Theatre while living with AIDS in 1989. The Hollywood Reporter says the performance is already drawing awards-season attention; Huntsinger called Scott a revelation who gives the role a towering force. Leigh’s *Tender Loving Care* may have the most emotional weight before anyone has seen a frame. Kate O’Flynn stars as a government social worker dealing with the aftermath of a relationship. Leigh, who is 83 and has myositis, has said the film could be his last. Huntsinger told The Hollywood Reporter that she would be proud if it were the film he retired on, placing it among his best work. Cannes titles include Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner *Fjord*, Andrey Zvyagintsev’s grand-prize winner *Minotaur*, Pawel Pawlikowski’s directing winner *Fatherland*, and directing co-winners *La Bola Negra* and *Gentle Monster*. *Club Kid* and Ira Sachs’ *The Man I Love* are also part of that group. The Hollywood Reporter notes that *Rose*, which won Sandra Hüller the Berlin Film Festival’s best-actress prize, will screen in Telluride as well. Venice arrivals include Martin McDonagh’s *Wild Horse Nine*, Danny Boyle’s Rupert Murdoch drama *Ink*, Werner Herzog’s *Bucking Fastard* and the mountaineering documentary *Everest: The Other Side* from Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. Léa Seydoux appears in three films: *Alpha Gang*, *Gentle Monster* and Arthur Harari’s *The Unknown*. Haigh is being honored alongside *A Long Winter*; Hüller alongside *Rose*; and Malkovich alongside *Wild Horse Nine*. The festival says each tribute will include clips, an onstage interview and a screening of the recipient’s new work. Rebecca Hall is this year’s Guest Director. Her selections, presented with Turner Classic Movies, include her father Peter Hall’s *Akenfield*, Kenneth Lonergan’s *Margaret*, Shirley Clarke’s *Portrait of Jason*, Joseph Losey’s *The Servant*, Charlie Kaufman’s *Synecdoche, New York* and Peter Bogdanovich’s *What’s Up, Doc?* The festival will also mark the 10th anniversary of Barry Jenkins’ *Moonlight*, which premiered at Telluride in 2016. Bryan Fogel’s *The Row* follows endurance athlete Tez Steinberg’s attempts to row from California to Hawaii and later from Hawaii to Australia. Deadline reports that Steinberg spent 197 days alone at sea and filmed more than 600 hours of material across two crossings; Fogel and his team shaped footage from more than 700 hours into a psychological portrait as well as an athletic record. Other documentaries include Frank Marshall and Nigel Sinclair’s *Pete Townshend: Behind Blue Eyes*, Nanette Burstein’s *Carl Sagan: We Are Made of Star Stuff*, Pegah Ahangarani’s *Rehearsals for a Revolution* and Mark Cousins’ 16-hour *The Story of Documentary Film*, scheduled across four screenings. ## The secret Sunday film keeps Telluride’s gamble alive The festival’s most tantalizing booking remains unnamed. Vanity Fair reports that the distributor agreed to keep one movie secret until viewers are walking into the theater. Huntsinger promised a film with major names and said audiences’ jaws would stay on the floor. She ruled out *Digger*, *Dune: Part 3* and *The Social Reckoning*. The Los Angeles Times describes the mystery as a Sunday world premiere, while TheWrap notes additional TBA slots on the schedule. Telluride has always sold the risk of buying a pass before knowing the films.
