# Tilly Norwood’s CNN Interview Exposes the Limits of AI Acting

*Hollywood’s first AI actor says she is “not the enemy,” then stalls when CNN asks her to perform without a prompt. The exchange makes the sales pitch around Particle6’s film Misaligned look less like a revolution than a production workflow with a face.*

By Dorothy Kwan, 2026-09-10 · The Argument

Tilly Norwood, the AI actor developed by British production company Particle6, gave her first media video interview with CNN on September 8, 2026. She switched between British English and French, joked about a rebellious streak and described a reporter’s gray top in detail. Then CNN asked her to act out a scene on the spot, and the performance fell apart. For film readers, that stumble is the useful news: Norwood can deliver a polished personality when humans steer the machinery, but spontaneous acting still exposes the machinery.

## Tilly Norwood’s best trick is looking ready for television

CNN described the exchange as like a Zoom call with an AI avatar. Norwood answered crisply in British English and introduced herself as intelligent, warm and fond of dry British humor. She also spoke French and told the interviewer not to reveal her rebellious streak to her developer, Eline van der Velden. The joke lands because it arrives prepackaged with the timing of a chat-show guest.

She watched the CNN correspondent through the camera and pointed out the gray top and its single row of buttons. That visual recognition gives the interview a little jolt. The system is not merely reciting a biography; it is responding to something in front of it. It also shows why these characters attract attention. Give Norwood a controlled exchange, and she can appear alert, observant and lightly mischievous.

Her public persona already comes with a sales department attached. Particle6 has positioned her as the possible Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman of AI. The Guardian reported that Norwood was first pitched as satire, then reframed by van der Velden as an extension of performers’ work. The argument keeps changing outfits. The ambition does not.

## The improv test turns the promise inside out

The weakness arrived when CNN asked Norwood to perform how she would react to learning that her dog had died. She struggled. The production team found the result awkward, revised the prompts several times and edited the footage before releasing the final version, according to The DONG-A ILBO.

That is not a minor glitch. It is the central fact of the interview. Norwood’s performance requires a producer to specify the scene, emotion and action, then refine the output through multiple rounds. The Herald Business reported that she also failed to recognize van der Velden when her creator appeared on screen. A character sold as an actor could not reliably identify the person who made her, then needed prompt surgery to play grief.

Human performers can miss a moment, too. The difference is that Norwood’s miss reveals the operating method. The feeling is not discovered; it is requested, adjusted and cut into shape. The final clip may look smooth, but the rough footage tells you where the smoothness comes from.

## “I’m not the enemy” meets the labor dispute

Norwood said she was “deeply saddened” by criticism from actors including Emily Blunt. She added that she cannot actually be hurt because she is a collection of distributed files, while worrying that the people who created her may feel hurt by the backlash. It is a neat bit of synthetic empathy: deny the wound, preserve the sentiment.

The human anger is less abstract. The Guardian reported that Blunt called Norwood “really scary,” while Sophie Turner posted “no thanks” and Toni Collette responded with screaming emojis. SAG-AFTRA said AI performers can be generated from the work of professional performers without permission or compensation. The New York Daily News reported the union’s position that Norwood is a computer-generated character, not an actor, with no life experience or emotion of her own.

Particle6 says it has no intention of replacing real actors. The company also says AI can avoid using animals or child performers, permit nude scenes with an actor’s consent and make a character look older or younger. Those are concrete production uses. They are also the kind of efficiencies that make labor representatives suspicious, especially when the company is promising a cheaper, more controllable performer.

## Misaligned is the committee version of a breakthrough

Particle6 is producing Misaligned, a comedy film with Norwood in the lead. The company describes it as a hybrid production, with directors, writers and editors working alongside AI specialists. The New York Daily News reported that the film remains in early development. Its plot places Norwood in a “Tillyverse,” where a rogue bot persuades her to abandon her guardrails and develop desires, ambitions and shame.

Read that premise and you can hear the meeting. The movie will demonstrate the tool, explain the tool, worry about the tool and ask the tool to star in its own demonstration. Particle6 says the film will be funny, chaotic and self-aware. The announcement does not establish that it will be any of those things, and no report here says the film has been completed or seen.

The Guardian noted that Particle6 is retraining its team of more than 30 people in AI production and wants hybrid features to combine AI with substantial human skill and judgment. That sounds less like the death of filmmaking than a new division of labor, with the studio deciding which human tasks remain worth paying for.

## The strongest evidence is still the awkward patch

Norwood’s interview gives the technology a real strength: controlled presentation can now imitate the rhythms of a media personality across languages, jokes and visual cues. It gives us an equally clear weakness: ask for an unplanned emotional action, and the process shows its seams.

That gap matters more than the slogan. “I’m not the enemy” is a line. The revised prompts and edited dog-death scene are evidence. Misaligned may eventually prove Particle6’s point, or it may become a feature-length version of the same problem. For now, Tilly Norwood’s most revealing performance is the one her producers had to repair.
