# Verity Lets Anne Hathaway Speak Where Hoover’s Book Held Back

*The Oct. 2 Colleen Hoover adaptation puts Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett inside a psychological thriller. Early footage suggests the film may make Verity Crawford more visible than she was on the page.*

By Marcus Reid, 2026-08-27 · Away From Set

The first trailer for *Verity* arrived on Aug. 11, 2026, and it changed the practical question around the next Colleen Hoover movie: not whether another Hoover book can reach theaters, but how this one will handle a story built on uncertainty. InStyle reported via Yahoo Entertainment that the film, due Oct. 2, stars Dakota Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh, Anne Hathaway as Verity Crawford and Josh Hartnett as Jeremy Crawford. Cosmopolitan also reported the Oct. 2 theatrical date. For film readers, the draw is plain: after Hoover’s recent screen run of romance dramas, this one walks into a psychological thriller with a locked room, a manuscript and three faces we know well enough to distrust beautifully.

## Dakota Johnson Enters the Crawford House as Lowen Ashleigh

According to InStyle’s Yahoo Entertainment report, Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer hired by Jeremy Crawford to finish the remaining books in a series by his wife, Verity Crawford. That is a clean job on paper and a terrible one for peace of mind. The kind of job where the desk is not the problem. The room is.

Cosmopolitan describes Lowen as a young writer who relocates to the Crawford estate to ghostwrite for Verity, a famous novelist who cannot finish the work after an accident. InStyle reported that Verity has been paralyzed after a car accident, while Cosmopolitan’s movie synopsis says Verity Crawford is played by Hathaway and Lowen is played by Johnson.

That casting asks something specific of Johnson. Lowen is not walking into the story as a detective with a badge and a flashlight. She is walking in as a hired writer, which means she has to read the room for money, work and danger all at once. She needs the paycheck and the access. She also needs to keep her head when the pages she finds begin to change the way she sees the people around her.

## Anne Hathaway’s Verity May Not Stay on the Page

The reported change that matters most is Verity herself. InStyle’s Yahoo Entertainment article says Hoover’s 2018 novel keeps readers largely with Lowen’s point of view, with Verity coming to them through the autobiography Lowen discovers. In the trailer, by contrast, Verity appears to address the camera directly.

That is not a small screen choice. A book can make a found manuscript feel like a private trespass. A movie has faces, breath, eye lines and timing. Once Hathaway’s Verity is not only a name on a page but a woman looking into the lens, the audience has another body in the room. The doubt does not vanish. It gets a new shape.

InStyle reported that the trailer includes Hathaway in a red suit with matching lipstick and a line in which Verity calls her words honest, bloody and frightening. I will not pretend to know how the finished film uses that image. The trailer’s suggestion, though, is that the adaptation wants Verity to be present in a way the novel did not allow Lowen to fully meet.

For Hathaway, that means playing more than a hidden source of dread. She may have to carry the strange burden of a character whose truth is the very thing the story keeps testing.

## Josh Hartnett’s Jeremy Crawford Sits at the Center of the Doubt

InStyle reported that Jeremy Crawford hires Lowen to complete Verity’s books. Cosmopolitan’s synopsis identifies Jeremy, played by Hartnett, as Verity’s husband, and says Lowen struggles to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction and opportunity from obsession after finding Verity’s notes.

That is where Hartnett’s job gets interesting. Jeremy cannot simply be the grieving husband in the handsome house, because the story’s tension depends on how Lowen reads him as the manuscript changes her view. InStyle’s Yahoo Entertainment report says the novel’s suspense comes from the ambiguity around whether Verity or Jeremy is the villain.

A role like that can get flattened if the movie tips its hand too early. The hope here, and I mean hope, is that Hartnett gets to play the quiet shifts: the pause that could be pain, the kindness that could be need, the room where gratitude starts to look like something else. Nobody needs the movie to announce its answers with cymbals. The faces can do some of the work.

## The Trailer Points to a Different Team Manuscript Debate

InStyle reported that readers of the book have argued over “Team Manuscript” and “Team Letter,” shorthand for whether they believe Verity’s account or think she was misleading people. The article also says the trailer appears to alter that debate by bringing Verity’s autobiography to life onscreen.

That is the key expectation to carry into the theater. The film may not simply copy the book’s method, because a camera cannot hide in prose the same way a narrator can. If Verity speaks to us, even in material tied to the manuscript, the audience gets tone, posture and performance. Those things can make a confession feel more intimate, or more suspicious, or both.

InStyle’s trailer account includes a moment where Verity turns toward Lowen from outside the house, startling her. It also describes quick images that include Lowen kissing Jeremy, then the camera pulling back to reveal Verity and Lowen kissing instead, followed by Lowen with a bloody lip. Those are trailer images, not proof of how scenes play in the completed film. Still, they tell us the marketing is selling confusion as part of the experience.

## Colleen Hoover’s Screen Run Takes a Harder Turn

InStyle reported via Yahoo Entertainment that *Verity* follows several recent Hoover adaptations: *It Ends with Us* in 2024, *Regretting You* in October 2025 and *Reminders of Him* in March 2026. The same report says *Verity*, directed by Michael Showalter, shifts away from those romance dramas into a psychological thriller.

That change matters for the people making it. A romance drama can live or die on longing, timing and the ache of a choice. A thriller like *Verity* has to manage suspicion. It has to make a hallway feel like information. It has to make a page on a desk feel dangerous without turning every corner into a trick.

Cosmopolitan reported that the cast also includes Ismael Cruz Córdova and Brady Wagner. The three central names will bring many viewers in, but the film’s real test may be plainer than star power. It has to decide how much of Hoover’s uncertainty belongs to Lowen, how much belongs to Verity, and how much the audience is allowed to hold in its own hands.

The release date is close now: Oct. 2, with Johnson crossing the threshold, Hartnett opening the door, and Hathaway waiting somewhere inside the Crawford house.
