Released direct-to-video on April 4, 2000, the film was produced by MGM Animation. This is the only MGM Animation production not to be available exclusively through Warner Home Video worldwide and is also the final MGM Animation film before the studio's closure in 2002. It is an adaptation of Mark Twain's 1876 novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, with a cast of anthropomorphic animals.
