A film about ambition that ends in failure is a morality tale, and morality tales are easy. These three are harder, because in each of them the character gets what they wanted.

What separates them is where the film puts the bill. Whiplash hands it to the audience and walks out of the room. La La Land itemises it in a five-minute fantasy of the life that was not chosen. The Dark Knight hides it inside a lie that two men agree to maintain for the city's benefit.

None of the three tells you whether the price was worth paying. That refusal is the axis.
