Critic for the Village Voice and Vogue whose From Reverence to Rape (1974) founded feminist film criticism as a discipline — a history of how the movies loved women on screen while shrinking what they were allowed to be. Haskell's later work on Ford, Spielberg and the woman's picture keeps the same double vision: adoration of the medium, audit of its terms.
