A German actress who worked as a nanny before drama school, joined the Deutsches Theater in 1916, and was then typecast for the rest of her life as the eccentric older woman — the shrill secretary, teacher, headmistress or neighbour, in small parts meant to amuse. Sound film wanted so many of them that she barely returned to the stage until after 1945.
