cinematographer · Actor
A French cinematographer who started out at sixteen as a travelling puppeteer with his brother, then worked up from third assistant cameraman at the Billancourt studios. He operated for Eugen Schüfftan on Carné's Quai des Brumes and took his non-naturalistic light from him; his own breakthrough came in 1946, on La Bataille du Rail and Cocteau's La Belle et la Bête.
