Polygon’s September 4 list puts ten new movies in front of viewers this weekend, with arrivals spread across HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix and other major services. The lineup includes the latest Star Wars adventure, a revived horror spoof, a Gal Gadot chase movie and a Ryan Reynolds buddy comedy. For film readers, the useful news is simple: these titles are available now, so the weekend decision can be made from the couch.

HBO Max’s London bomb turns a heist into a countdown

“Fuze,” now on HBO Max, begins when an old World War II bomb is unearthed in London. Authorities evacuate much of the city, creating an opening for a major bank robbery, according to USA Today. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays a British soldier trying to stop the bomb from exploding, while Theo James and Sam Worthington belong to the gang attempting the theft. Polygon lists the film as a 1-hour-37-minute action picture directed by David Mackenzie.

The setup gives the actors two kinds of pressure to carry: soldiers trying to save a city and criminals trying to use its empty streets. A bomb does not care which side has the better plan. It simply keeps ticking.

Hulu’s “Signal One” sends a scientist toward the stars

Hulu’s “Signal One” follows a scientist recruited by a tech billionaire for a secret mission on a Caribbean island. She discovers that the assignment involves a machine built to contact extraterrestrial life. Polygon identifies Isabelle Fuhrman, Josh Hutcherson and David Thewlis as the leads, with Jonathon Sobol directing the 1-hour-27-minute science-fiction film.

The film’s central situation belongs to the old tradition of people with money hiring people with knowledge, then revealing that the job is stranger than advertised. Here, the workplace is an island and the client wants an answer from beyond Earth.

Netflix brings family danger and a long-running spoof back

Netflix is home to “The Whisper Man,” a psychological thriller based on Alex North’s novel. USA Today reports that Adam Scott plays a widowed crime writer whose son is kidnapped. The evidence points toward an imprisoned serial killer, forcing the writer to seek help from his estranged father, a retired cop played by Robert De Niro. Yahoo’s account describes the same father-and-son investigation as the story’s engine.

This is a story about two men who have to work together while carrying old damage into a new emergency. The missing child gives the plot its urgency, but the people in the room with the case give it weight.

Netflix also offers “Scary Movie” (2026), which brings back Marlon Wayans, Anna Faris and Regina Hall after more than a decade away. Polygon says the survivors Cindy, Brenda, Ray and Shorty face a new Ghostface while the film parodies recent horror hits. USA Today names “Sinners,” “Ma,” “Get Out” and “The Substance” among the targets. The joke, as ever, depends on recognizing the movie being sent up.

Prime Video’s “The Runner” keeps Gal Gadot moving

In “The Runner,” Gal Gadot plays a London lawyer who receives a call saying her son has been kidnapped. Polygon says she must cross the city and complete mysterious tasks to save him. USA Today adds that she has one hour to take out a key witness in a criminal trial, communicating with the villain through a cellphone and headphones.

That clock asks Gadot to carry nearly every beat in motion: running, listening, deciding and trying to remain a mother while the job turns personal. The film runs 1 hour and 24 minutes and co-stars Damian Lewis and Kenton Lloyd Morgan.

Prime Video also has “The Last Sunrise,” a romantic drama about college student Ry, played by Maia Reficco, who travels with her mother to Mallorca for a real estate deal. She meets a local fisherman, played by Fernando Lindez, while her mother handles business. Yahoo describes the film as a sunlit summer romance, while USA Today notes that Ry lives with a chronic illness.

Disney Plus and Apple TV offer space, spies and a very small partner

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” is now streaming on Disney Plus after its May theatrical release. Polygon says Din Djarin and Grogu work as bounty hunters for the fledgling New Republic, reporting to Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver, while tracking former Empire supporters. Pedro Pascal voices Din, with Jeremy Allen White and Weaver joining the cast.

Apple TV’s “Mayday” places Ryan Reynolds in the Soviet Union of the 1980s. He plays a U.S. Navy pilot shot down during a covert mission, then forced into an unlikely partnership with an ex-KGB agent played by Kenneth Branagh. Decider calls it a buddy-action story built around the agent’s love of American culture; Polygon lists Maria Bakalova among the cast.

The remaining choices widen the range: “The Wrong Girls,” a comedy about best friends and an experimental drug, is on VOD; “Dark Hollow,” a monster horror story set after a mining accident, is also on VOD; “Erupcja,” starring Charli XCX in a Polish romance, is on Mubi; and “Parasomnia,” about a woman whose dream demon may have taken her missing friend, is on Shudder. Ten films, several services, one weekend, and enough monsters, spies and family trouble to keep the remote busy.
