Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor Fight Dinosaurs Like It's 1982

Early reviews call the Amblin-style throwback fun, uneven, or both, ahead of its August 14 release.

"The End of Oak Street" opens August 14, and the first reviews agree on one thing before they disagree on everything else: this is a movie built to look like it was made forty years ago, on purpose.

Suburbia, Interrupted

Directed and written by David Robert Mitchell, "The End of Oak Street" tears one cul-de-sac loose from the rest of the world. After a cosmic event rips Oak Street away from its own suburb, the Platt family finds themselves stranded somewhere unrecognizable, in a story that Warner Bros. has pitched as a straight throwback to the teen-and-tween adventure films of the early-to-mid 1980s. The setting is 1982, and Variety's review called it a dinosaur horror film in that exact lineage — closer in spirit to "Jurassic Park" than to anything released this decade.

J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella produced alongside Mitchell, Matt Jackson, and Tommy Harper, and that Abrams connection shows up in nearly every review as a reference point for the film's Amblin-style tone.

A Family Built Like the Platts

Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor lead the cast as the elder Platts, with Maisy Stella and Christian Convery playing their children; P.J. Byrne and Chris Coy round out the ensemble. The Hollywood Reporter's review described Hathaway and McGregor anchoring what it called "ersatz '80s Amblin nostalgia" — a phrase meant as a compliment about the film's craft and a shrug about its originality in the same breath.

That split runs through nearly every notice so far: nobody is arguing the cast isn't committed, or that the production doesn't nail the look of the period. The disagreement is about how much a movie earns just by getting the wallpaper right.

Critics Split on the Throwback

RogerEbert.com's review leaned into the fun of it, arguing that the end of the world has rarely looked this entertaining on screen. Variety went further, calling it a "loopier" and in some ways better version of the "Jurassic" formula it's borrowing from. The Hollywood Reporter and the Boston Globe were both cooler, with the Globe's review after an early press screening arguing the film needed fresher ideas than a 1980s costume could supply on its own.

Deadline's review sits in between the two camps, praising Hathaway and McGregor's chemistry as the thing that keeps the movie watchable even when the story leans hardest on nostalgia rather than surprise.

Where It Lands Before Opening Weekend

None of that split reads as fatal. What comes through in every review, positive or not, is that "The End of Oak Street" knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be and doesn't apologize for it. Whether that is enough is a question Warner Bros. will get an answer to fast — the studio has had a rough year at the box office, and early social reaction out of press screenings has been read as a sign this could be the film that turns that around.

Hathaway and McGregor, for their part, are playing this completely straight: two parents trying to keep their kids alive against something enormous, in a movie that wants you to feel eleven years old again while it does it.

She was in front of a camera in 1907 and still in front of one in 1957 — aunts, neighbours, housekeepers, forty-nine films.
