Apple TV’s Mayday has its central cast in place for the 2026 action thriller, with Ryan Reynolds playing a U.S. Navy pilot stranded in Soviet Russia and Kenneth Branagh as the former KGB agent who finds him. Yardbarker, in an article first published by Netflix Junkie and updated Sept. 2, 2026, identifies the five principal performers and their roles. That pairing matters because the film’s engine is not only the escape. It is the uneasy friendship between two men who begin on opposite sides of the Cold War.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley direct. The story puts Reynolds’ character in the frozen Russian wilderness after his aircraft is compromised during a secret reconnaissance mission in 1987. Branagh’s character lives alone as a carpenter. Their survival depends on each other, which gives the cast a lot to carry before the first joke lands.

Ryan Reynolds Plays Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly

Reynolds plays Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot sent on a covert mission during the Cold War. When his aircraft is compromised over Soviet territory, he ejects and ends up behind enemy lines.

The role asks Reynolds to spend the film as a man cut off from the machinery that made him confident. Troy has to survive the weather, the pursuit, and the fact that his best chance may be a former KGB agent. The material describes him as trying to escape enemy territory, but it also gives him a private reason to keep moving: his father, Harold Kelly, remains part of the story.

That is a useful change of scale for a star best known here for fast talk and comic timing. The film still promises humor, but Troy’s situation is blunt. He is cold, hunted, and dependent on a stranger.

Kenneth Branagh Is Nikolai Ustinov, the Ex-KGB Carpenter

Branagh plays Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB agent who now lives in isolation and works as a carpenter. He discovers Troy and becomes essential to the pilot’s survival.

Nikolai is also where the film’s odd-couple humor seems to gather. Yardbarker reports that he has an unexpected affection for American culture, a detail that gives his partnership with Troy a little room to breathe. He is not presented as a simple rescuer. He is a man with one life behind him, another life in front of him, and an American pilot suddenly occupying his cabin.

For Branagh, the part appears to hinge on restraint as much as authority. Nikolai knows the country Troy is trying to cross, yet the two men still have to decide whether trust is safer than suspicion.

Maria Bakalova Adds Anna Ustinov to the Escape

Maria Bakalova plays Anna Ustinov, Nikolai’s daughter. She becomes caught up in the attempt to get Troy to safety.

The role connects the two leads in a more personal way. Anna is not described as a bystander waiting for the men to solve the problem. Her involvement gives the escape an emotional dimension and ties Troy’s survival to Nikolai’s family.

That also changes the shape of the partnership. Troy and Nikolai may begin as an improvised alliance, but Anna makes their decisions matter beyond the two men in the snow. Bakalova’s character is the person who brings the family cost of the escape into the room.

Marcin Dorociński Hunts the Fugitives as Alexander Volkov

Marcin Dorociński plays Alexander Volkov, the Soviet officer pursuing Troy and Nikolai. His job in the story is simple in the most useful sense: he keeps the pressure on.

Volkov’s pursuit gives the escape a clock. Every choice made by Troy and Nikolai has to account for a relentless officer who wants them found. The material does not supply a personal history for Volkov, so the film’s reported setup leaves him as the force closing the distance rather than a mystery to solve in print.

That pursuit should also keep the story from settling into a quiet two-hander. Nikolai’s cabin may offer shelter, but Volkov makes clear that shelter cannot last.

David Morse Plays Troy’s Father, Harold Kelly

David Morse plays Harold Kelly, Troy’s father. His part brings another personal element to the Cold War adventure and helps ground the pilot’s motivations.

The cast guide does not give Harold a larger backstory, and the film has not been seen here. What the reporting does establish is his place in Troy’s emotional world. Troy is not only trying to reach safety; his family remains part of what gives the escape weight.

The reported cast leaves Mayday with a clean dramatic arrangement: Reynolds carries the stranded pilot, Branagh supplies the unlikely ally, Bakalova brings family into the danger, Dorociński keeps the fugitives moving, and Morse anchors Troy’s reasons for making it home. For a story built on enemies becoming partners, the most telling room may be the one shared by Troy and Nikolai, where a U.S. pilot and a former KGB agent have to decide what they can risk believing about each other.
