Britney Spears Biopic Moves Forward, but Cast Is Still Blank

Liz Meriwether says she is only starting to shape the Britney Spears screenplay, which keeps the film alive and the real details out of reach. Universal, Jon M. Chu, and Marc Platt are still attached, but the studio has not named a cast or a release date.

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, Yahoo reported that Britney Spears' planned biopic is still alive, and screenwriter Liz Meriwether says she is only now shaping the story. That is the update. It means the movie has a writer in the room, but not a cast or a release date, and that is the difference between a project and a press release with better lighting. Meriwether told Vanity Fair she is at the start of the process. For film readers, the point is plain: the Spears movie has moved past the vague 'it exists' stage and is still far from the part where anyone can sell you a ticket.

Liz Meriwether Says She Is at the Beginning

That is the most useful part of the report, because it does not try to sell you fog as momentum. Meriwether says she has only recently started shaping the screenplay. No fake triumph, no grandiosity, just a writer saying the pages are still young. Hollywood loves to act as if a title and a few attached names equal progress. They do not. They equal a meeting, maybe two.

Meriwether also points to the timing. She thinks the moment is right to revisit Spears' life because the way the media treated famous women in the 1990s and early 2000s has changed. That is not a small thing. A Spears biopic lives or dies on whether it can look back at that machine without pretending it was normal. Meriwether says she sees a chance to tell the story through a different lens. That is the business of the movie now: not spectacle, but angle.

Britney Spears, the Media Machine, and the Timing

Meriwether is close in age to Spears, and she says she remembers the same media era that shaped Spears' rise. That matters more than the usual studio talk about taste and prestige. Age is not authority, but it can mean a writer knows the smell of the room. She knows what the tabloids were selling, and she knows how hard that kind of noise can be to make sense of after the fact.

People reports that Meriwether has also been back in Spears' music, the memoir, and the audiobook narration by Michelle Williams. That sounds like homework, and it is, but it also tells you what kind of movie this wants to be. Not a checklist. Not a victory lap. More like an attempt to hear the woman beneath the brand, with the brand still loud in the background.

That is where the project has some life. Spears' story does not need a museum display. It needs a writer who can tell the difference between public myth and public damage, between the performance and the machinery around it. Meriwether's comments do not promise that. They only say she knows the mess she is stepping into.

Universal Keeps Jon M. Chu and Marc Platt Attached

The rest of the setup is still what Yahoo reported earlier this year and last year. Universal Pictures bought the rights to Spears' 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, in 2024. Jon M. Chu remains attached to direct, and Marc Platt will produce. Spears first teased the project in 2024 as a secret project with Platt.

That is a tidy list of names, the sort of thing studio people love to read aloud as if the film were already breathing. But a list of names is not a movie. It is the shell around one. When the cast has not been announced and the release date still sits in a drawer somewhere, all that polish starts to feel like committee language. Everybody is attached. Nobody has shown you the face of the thing.

And still, the update matters, because development troubles can kill these projects quietly. Earlier reports described problems in development. The hiring of Meriwether and her new comments say the work has not stalled out. It has moved, which is not the same as moving fast, and it is certainly not the same as having something to show.

No Cast List, No Release Date Yet

So here is the clean fact, no frosting: Universal has not revealed the cast or the release date. Fans should not expect either just yet. The movie has crossed the attachment phase, not the announcement phase.

That leaves the piece where it always lands in Hollywood reporting: a project with famous names, a memoir, a director, a producer, and a screenwriter saying she is still at the beginning. That is not nothing. It is also not a trailer, not a poster, and not a promise that the thing will arrive looking anything like the headlines around it.

For now, Universal has not revealed the cast or release date.
