Variety reports that Richard Kelly has officially set a Donnie Darko sequel in motion, though not first as a film. The filmmaker’s new book, The Philosophy of Time Travel, is due in Q4 2026 from Range Literary Publishing, with a cover and teaser now revealed. The title alone will ring a bell for anyone who has spent too long with the original’s lore. The hook is bigger than a tie-in: Variety says Kelly sees the roughly 800-page novel as the first step toward multiple screen sequels, beginning in animation or motion capture and possibly moving later into live action.

Richard Kelly Returns to Donnie Darko in Print

The Philosophy of Time Travel is set in 1988, right after the events of Donnie Darko. Variety reports that it picks up in the 14 months after Donnie’s death, the ending that made Kelly’s 2001 film feel less like a closed loop than a bruise left on time itself.

The book has been written by Kelly over the past decade, according to Variety. It is now available for preorder through Barnes & Noble and Amazon, though a specific sale date has not yet been announced. Its Q4 release is timed around the film’s 25th anniversary on October 26, 2026.

There is a funny charge in seeing this story come back as a brick of a book. Donnie Darko has always invited diagrams, message boards, classroom arguments, and late-night certainty that collapses by morning. A novel gives Kelly room to make the margins part of the text instead of leaving them to fan archaeology.

The Philosophy of Time Travel Is the Sci-Fi Title Fans Know

The title is not random branding. The Philosophy of Time Travel is the in-universe text tied to Roberta Sparrow, the figure better known to Donnie as Grandma Death. For a sequel, that is a loaded choice: Kelly is not selling a side adventure with a familiar name on the cover. He is going straight at the rules, wounds, and time mechanics that made the first film stick.

Variety reports that the novel uses a found-documents format, with alternating pieces from Donnie’s parents, Rose and Eddie Darko. Kelly told the outlet that the book follows them as they document what is happening, question why their son has died, and run separate efforts to understand the event.

That sounds right for this world. Donnie Darko was never only about a teenager seeing a rabbit and counting down to catastrophe. It was also about a town waking up from something it cannot prove happened. Putting Rose and Eddie at the center after the crash gives the sequel a colder problem: how do you mourn an event that may have saved everyone and still destroyed your house?

Kelly Wants Animation First, Then a 28-Year Jump

The sequel plan is not modest. Variety reports that Kelly wants this novel adapted into an animated or motion-capture film, then followed by a live-action project that jumps about 28 years into the future.

Kelly told Variety he has spent more than two decades trying to work out a Donnie Darko sequel film, with rights issues and changing corporate ownership complicating the path. He said his condition for a true sequel was to reunite the original cast and take the story to a much larger scale.

That is both exciting and risky. Donnie Darko’s power has always lived in its specific ache: a suburban October, a jet engine, a teenager who knows too much and not enough. A huge sequel plan could smother that. It could also be the only way Kelly can return without making a smaller, flatter echo of his own movie.

The 28-year jump also matters because Kelly told Variety that later material begins around 2015 and 2016 and moves forward from there. If the book covers the aftermath in 1988, the screen plan would turn the original cast’s aging into part of the design rather than a production inconvenience.

The Original Cast Has Not Been Asked Yet

Variety reports that Kelly has not yet approached the Donnie Darko cast about reprising their roles. He wants The Philosophy of Time Travel to function as the pitch.

That cast still carries a lot of the film’s strange charge: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Katharine Ross, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, and Seth Rogen were part of the original ensemble. Donnie himself is dead in the story, but Kelly’s comments to Variety suggest the sequel material gives many characters fuller arcs in the reality after the tangent universe.

Kelly also told Variety that some characters who did awful things in the dream of the first film may read differently in the sequel’s reality. That is a dangerous door to open, and a fascinating one. Donnie Darko’s moral weather is part of its identity. If the sequel turns its nightmare behavior into something the survivors have to live with and study, the return has a real dramatic engine.

Range Literary Publishing Makes It Its First Novel

The Philosophy of Time Travel will be the first novel released by Range Literary Publishing, Variety reports. The imprint comes from Range Media Partners and has framed the book as part of a slate aimed at projects with film and TV potential.

Variety also reports that Range Literary Publishing has Kenan and Kel Meet Zombies coming, while its 2027 slate includes books from Michael Cooper, Gabe Basso, Bhavna Shyamalan, Akilah Releford Gould, and Mark DeFriest. But Donnie Darko is the one with a built-in myth system and a creator openly talking about a screen future.

For readers who love the film, the clean fact is this: the sequel is no longer just an old possibility attached to interviews and rights talk. Kelly has put the next piece into a form that can be read. The question after that is whether Hollywood wants to follow him back to Middlesex, Virginia, after the jet engine falls.
