‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Criterion Disc Moves Up With New Cover Art

Criterion’s physical edition now arrives November 3, nearly two months earlier than first reported. Ami Thompson’s battle-ready cover and a feature-length animatic make this far more than shelf decoration.

Criterion has moved its physical release of KPop Demon Hunters to November 3, nearly two months earlier than the December 31 date first reported from an Amazon preorder listing. The collection has also revealed Ami Thompson’s cover art, which puts Rumi, Mira and Zoey in mid-leap, weapons drawn against geometric patterns recalling the Honmoon.

That earlier date matters because this is the first durable, extras-heavy home edition of a Netflix phenomenon. The Sony Pictures Animation musical received only a limited theatrical release, as Rolling Stone noted, and remains exclusive to Netflix. Criterion is giving a movie built for streaming the kind of physical record that streaming services rarely make themselves.

Ami Thompson Puts HUNTR/X Into Battle

Thompson’s illustration avoids the easy option of treating the Criterion box as prestige merchandise. Rumi, Mira and Zoey are caught in action rather than posed as pop stars, with the Honmoon-like design pressing in behind them. Polygon identified Thompson as the artist and connected those background patterns to the film’s mystical barrier.

It is a smart image for this particular release. KPop Demon Hunters became enormous partly through songs and characters that could circulate beyond the film, but the cover pulls those elements back into its fantasy conflict. This is HUNTR/X as a fighting unit, not another variation on a concert poster.

Criterion will sell three configurations. According to Yahoo’s report on the company’s retail page, the 4K UHD and Blu-ray package costs $39.96, the Blu-ray edition costs $31.96 and the DVD costs $23.96. All three were available for preorder ahead of the November 3 release.

Criterion Gives the Film a Feature-Length Animatic

The three-disc 4K edition includes a Dolby Vision HDR presentation from a new 4K digital master and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack approved by directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, according to Yahoo. Two accompanying Blu-rays contain the film and supplements.

The most valuable extra may be the complete feature-length animatic, introduced by Kang and Appelhans. Animatics expose decisions that finished animation tends to conceal: staging, rhythm, discarded visual information and the basic movement of a sequence before polish takes over. For a film whose speed and graphic force are central to its appeal, that rough version could be as revealing as any conventional commentary track.

The package also contains a new making-of documentary, two video essays by Taylor Ramos and Tony Zhou of Every Frame a Painting, lyric videos for the songs and the trailer. Criterion has included English subtitles for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers and English descriptive audio, Polygon reported.

On paper, the physical additions are modest but well chosen: collectible postcards bearing original illustrations by artists who worked on the movie, plus an essay by critic Karen Han. They make the edition collectible without letting trinkets overwhelm the filmmaking material.

A Netflix Hit Tests Criterion’s Old Boundaries

The choice has already irritated some longtime Criterion followers. The Atlantic reported that online critics called the release “off-brand” and a commercial grab. The objection is easy to understand: Criterion remains associated with neglected world cinema, festival discoveries and older Hollywood films, while KPop Demon Hunters became Netflix’s most-watched original title, according to Rolling Stone.

Yet Criterion has never been quite as austere as its reputation. The Atlantic pointed to its LaserDisc release of Ghostbusters and later editions of Michael Bay’s Armageddon and The Rock. The company’s November 2026 slate makes the old high-low appetite plain: KPop Demon Hunters arrives in the same month as David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, Hal Ashby’s Harold and Maude, Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette and Sergei Parajanov’s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors.

The stronger case for this edition is preservation, not canonization. Media scholar Amanda D. Lotz told The Atlantic that viewers have relied on corporations to keep digital films available even though preservation is not necessarily their job. A streaming title can be famous, heavily watched and still lack a copy that its audience can own.

‘Golden’ Success Now Has a Permanent Home

The film’s reach is difficult to separate from its music. Rolling Stone reported that “Golden” spent eight weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Oscar for Best Original Song. UPI also reported that the movie won Best Animated Feature, giving Criterion an awards winner as well as a commercial giant.

None of that settles whether KPop Demon Hunters belongs beside every film carrying a numbered Criterion spine. It does make the edition useful. The animatic documents how the movie was built; the essays place its images under scrutiny; the disc keeps the film outside the permissions and removals of a streaming library.

The sharpest answer to the gatekeeping argument is sitting on Thompson’s cover: three demon hunters suspended at the instant before impact, no buffering wheel between them and the viewer.
