Practical Magic 2 Ends Spider-Man’s Six-Week Box Office Reign

Practical Magic 2 has taken the top spot at the North American box office, ending Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s six-week run at No. 1 over the weekend ending September 13, 2026. The Warner Bros. sequel earned $30 million domestically and another $16 million overseas, according to Moviefone. For film readers, the handover matters because it is both a nostalgia win for a 1998 cult favorite and a rare pause in one of the summer’s strongest superhero performances.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day fell to second with $8.4 million. That is a steep gap, but hardly a defeat in commercial terms: Moviefone reports that the film remains just behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the second-highest-grossing domestic title of all time. Hollywood Outbreak put its expected seventh-weekend total at roughly $8.5 million and its domestic gross at about $935.27 million, leaving it a little more than $1 million short of The Force Awakens’ $936.6 million record.
Practical Magic 2 Wins With Nostalgia, Not a Blowout
The new No. 1 is a success, though its opening did not match the larger forecasts attached to it. Hollywood Outbreak reported that Practical Magic 2 made $13 million from 4,146 theaters on Friday, while Variety’s estimate, cited by the outlet, placed the full weekend near $30 million. Moviefone gave the completed domestic figure as $30 million.
That number carries extra weight because the first Practical Magic was never a theatrical giant. Hollywood Outbreak says the 1998 film opened with $13 million against a reported $75 million budget and finished with $94 million worldwide. Its audience grew after the theatrical run, turning the Owens sisters into the center of a cult favorite that people kept returning to. The sequel’s opening is the clearest sign yet that delayed affection can become a theatrical business case.
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as Sally and Gillian Owens, with Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing also back. The story moves 25 years ahead, placing Sally’s daughters in the path of the Owens family curse. Joey King, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña and Lee Pace join the returning cast.
