The New Simpsons Movie Is the Rare Sequel Title That Gets the Joke
Disney's D23 pavilion points to The New Simpsons Movie as the sequel's title ahead of its September 3, 2027 release. After two decades away from theaters, Springfield may be coming back with a name that sounds like a shrug and lands like a punchline.

Disney's D23 pavilion appears to have given the next Simpsons movie a better name than the placeholder it started with. ComicBook.com reported that the long-awaited sequel, once listed as The Simpsons Movie 2, was presented at D23 as The New Simpsons Movie. ComingSoon reported the same title and said the film is set for theaters on September 3, 2027. For film readers, that matters because The Simpsons has spent decades making lazy entertainment naming look ridiculous. Calling its second movie The New Simpsons Movie is not lazy. It is the joke.
The New Simpsons Movie Sounds Like Springfield
There is a tiny, pleasing stupidity to The New Simpsons Movie. That is the point.
The Simpsons Movie 2 would have been fine in the way a shipping label is fine. It tells you what is in the box. The New Simpsons Movie does something closer to the show's own voice: flat, faintly dumb, weirdly confident, and funnier the longer it sits there.
ComicBook.com reported that the title appeared on a D23 pavilion, alongside the Simpson family and other Springfield regulars. ComingSoon described it as the official title in its report, while ComicBook.com was more careful, saying the pavilion “seemingly” confirmed it. That distinction matters. Disney has not laid out the movie's story yet, and the reporting does not give a formal title announcement quote from the studio.
Still, if this is the name, it fits the property better than the obvious sequel tag. The Simpsons has always loved plain words made absurd by timing. The word “new” is funny here because the franchise is older than many of the people who will buy tickets. It is also practical: after so many seasons, specials, clips, memes, and couch gags, the film has to tell casual audiences one clean thing. This is the new one.

D23 Used the Homer Bush Meme as a Signal
The D23 setup did not stop at a logo. ComicBook.com reported that the installation recreated the famous image of Homer disappearing into a hedge, with Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie present. The outlet also noted appearances by Krusty, Abe Simpson, and Mr. Burns.
ComingSoon tied the pavilion to the same Homer bush gag and identified its television origin as the 1994 Season 5 episode “Homer Loves Flanders.” That detail is not just decoration. It tells you what kind of cultural memory Disney is leaning on.
