Themes & motifs
the taxonomy ↗- Parents and ChildrenThemeOzu films the visit and the silence around it: grown children too busy for parents who travelled a long way, and a widowed daughter-in-law who is kinder than either son.
- The Wordless StretchMotifOzu holds on a corridor, a wall, laundry on a line after the people have left; the grief lands in those held shots rather than in any line of dialogue.
