Maisie Williams Keeps Pulling Sandra Bullock Looks for Practical Magic 2

At the London premiere and the next day’s photocall, Maisie Williams wore two custom looks tied to Sandra Bullock’s 1999 and 2006 red-carpet outfits. The clothes do quiet work for the sequel: they make the family line visible before Practical Magic 2 opens on Sept. 18.

Maisie Williams spent the Practical Magic 2 rollout dressed like she had gone straight into Sandra Bullock’s old red-carpet closet. People reported that Williams arrived at the London premiere on Wednesday, Aug. 26, in a custom burgundy Ellie Misner gown that echoed Bullock’s 1999 Forces of Nature premiere look, then repeated the idea at Thursday’s photocall with another black dress tied to Bullock’s wardrobe. For a film reader, that matters because the sequel is not selling itself as a clean break. It is selling inheritance, and Williams is wearing it.

A Bullock Look Lands in London

The premiere brought Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, Joey King and Williams into the same frame, which already tells you the movie knows how to use a public room. Page Six said Williams chose a deep oxblood gown by British designer Ellie Misner, and the shape was built from pieces Bullock wore with much less ceremony in 1999: a boat-neck top, a skirt, and a simple red carpet line that Williams turned into a corseted bodice and a draped train.

I have a weakness for this kind of red-carpet echo. It gives the evening a little memory without making the new actor disappear inside the old one. Williams kept the comparison clear but not dead-on. Page Six noted the dress came with a ruby-toned Bulgari necklace, while the first People report said she also wore a ring and choker. That is where the money and the polish sit here: in the custom dress, the jewelry house, the extra height from Christian Louboutin, the bag from Roger Vivier. The look was not thrown together. It was built to point back.

What the 1999 Dress Asks of Williams

The part of this story that interests me most is not the nostalgia. It is the job Williams has been asked to do with it. She plays Antonia Owens, Bullock’s on-screen daughter, and the costume choices make that relationship visible before a line is spoken. In a sequel like this, the clothes are not decoration. They are a piece of the casting.

According to People, Williams and King were already talking in July, at Teen Vogue Fest on July 25, about drawing from late-1990s red carpet looks. King said the film’s clothes lean hard on 1990s fashion, with lace and airy colors. That fits the title, the cast, and the public face of the movie. Practical Magic has always sold a mood as much as a plot, and this press tour seems ready to keep that bargain alive.

Page Six also reported that stylist Dino Bonačić and Ellie Misner worked together on the premiere dress. Misner is London-based and known for demi-couture corsetry, with credits that include SZA, Lena Dunham and Tems. That detail matters because it tells you this is not a cheap copy job. The outfit had to nod at Bullock’s old photo while still giving Williams her own shape, her own waist, her own line down the carpet.

Bullock’s Closet Again, This Time in Black

The next day, the references kept going. People said the Practical Magic 2 cast returned for a photocall on Thursday, Aug. 27, in coordinated black looks, and Williams again reached for Bullock’s archive. This time the source was a black custom dress Bullock wore to the 2006 Infamous premiere. Page Six said Williams wore it with layered choker necklaces, a decorative brooch and a chainmail purse hanging from a ring.

That is a neat little pile of specifics. It gives the look weight without noise. The brooch and the chokers keep Williams from looking like a mannequin in somebody else’s memory, and the chainmail purse is the kind of detail that makes a reporter lean in. It also fits the rest of the day’s room. Bullock arrived in cheetah-print Givenchy. Kidman wore custom Chanel in seafoam green sequins. King showed up in sheer Miu Miu. Williams, by contrast, was the one doing the most direct conversation with the past.

W said the black dress had been custom-made for Bullock, which makes the borrowing feel less like a raid than a handoff. The older star is not being erased from the picture. She is being cited, twice, in public, by the younger actor who plays her daughter.

Why the Wardrobe Talk Matters Before Sept. 18

Practical Magic 2 opens in theaters on Sept. 18, reuniting the original coven with Williams and King. That opening date is still ahead of us, so I will stay on the honest side of hope. What makes me hopeful is plain enough: the sequel appears to know that its strongest images will come from the women in it, the old and the new, and from the small ways one generation hands a look to the next.

Williams told Fandango that her character has taken after her mother quite a lot. The clothes make that line easier to believe, and they do it without turning the tour into a joke. This is a film about family on one side of the frame and fashion memory on the other, and Williams has chosen to stand in both at once. On Thursday, the chainmail purse hung from a ring at her hand.
